Bowman or Leaf

Thanks for your help,

Joel

  • Bowman is the RC, 1948. All Leaf cards we're released in 1949 despite what you may have heard.

    I got it! image

Re-reading my post I might have came off more harsh than I would have liked. I should have included a smiley face. image

I always thought it was Henning, that was why I did not put two and two together.

generally I use screen names just for this reason and I usually do not know peoples names.

Again good luck on finding that card!

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I came across harsh on purpose. The 48 Bowman is the RC, NOT the 49 Leaf darn it!

Actually the 48 Leaf is considered one of his RC's in addition to the 48 Bowman. You personally might not consider it his rookie, as the majority of the 48 Leaf set was released in 1949, but most publications (SMR and Beckett Graded Card Investor) as well as the Post War HOF Set classify the 48 Bowman AND the 48 Leaf as Stan Musial's RC.

Joel, You will have an easier time finding the 48 Bowman in a low grade, but in my opinion the 48 Leaf is the way to go. Very pretty card!

Most publications are wrong, but I agree the Leaf is a better card.

FWIW I read over at net 54 from someone that actually was around then and he claimed that they came out late in 48

with the majority of the set coming in 49.

I think it was Ted Z.

If anyone wants the straight poop on this issue he is the person to ask.

    Good for you.

The Leaf set was issued in early '49. Just because publications call it '48 doesn't mean it is correct- it isn't.
    Musial's rookie is '48 Bowman.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Anthony so I mis understood what Ted was saying?

That is very possible as it happened at least 2 years ago.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Thanks for the info gentlemen. Also edited the title and content so it could stay in this forum.

If the Bowman 48's weren't so dag gone ugly I think the Leaf wouldn't be in the picture. Mantle 52s are more desired than 51s. Its just the way it is.

Although a totally different can of worms.... modern products come out the year after there label but usually nobody cares. 2009 Ultimate Collection anyone?

    Again thanks.

    Curt er... Joel
