why put an owner and a broadcaster on any list? It's apples and oranges. Buss has been a good owner for them, but no one would think he's anything without the players. Jerry West is the best Laker of them all (and I hate the Lakers) because he was one of their top 3 players and THEN won six championships as their GM. I also put Elgin above Kareem and Chamberlain because he played his whole career there. It's Magic, Kobe, West, Baylor and Worthy for "true" Lakers. You could certainly argue that Kareem has his best years as a Buck (tough argument, but he won a title and scored 30+/game 4 times in Milwaukee) and Wilt had his best years as a Warrior/Sixer. Shaq won an MVP and 3 Finals MVPs with the Lakers but was only with the team for 7 years. It would be like calling Jimmy Foxx one of the best Red Sox of all time. He has his best years with the A's. I guess Shaq COULD replace Worthy on my list, but I tend to like guys that spent their entire careers with one team.

Just one man's take. I'm sure many will disagree.

Mike ... I agree ... let's keep it to players only.

My top 5, and as you said its very debatable, in no particular order are:

    Kareem
    Magic
    Kobe
    Wilt
    West

Elgin Baylor has to go on that list, and probably pushes Kareem off of it for me. Like someone else said, he had his best years as a Buck. Might have to give some consideration to George Mikan, but that era is iffy for me.

Not the greatest Laker, but my favorite was "Big Game" James Worthy.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

As a former Laker's fan (from my growing up there) I have great appreciation for the Laker's franchise. I try to explain to my fellow Sacramento King's fans why I am embarrased by them hoisting division championship banners to the rafters here in Sac and retiring jerseys of players like Vlade and Webber. I tell my fellow King's fans to stop trying to compete with the Laker's because they are just in another world. The Laker's are just so impressive and looking at the top 5 reminds me how impressive they are. Take the 5 greatest Laker's and you have 5 of the top 10 or 15 players of the entire NBA of all time. The Laker's (like the Celtic's) are just a special franchise.

  • "Elgin Baylor has to go on that list, and probably pushes Kareem off of it for me. Like someone else said, he had his best years as a Buck. Might have to give some consideration to George Mikan, but that era is iffy for me. "

While Kareem had some of his most dominant seasons with the Bucks. His accomplishemnts as a Laker are pretty impressive.

    3 League MVP's
    5 NBA Titles
    1985 Championship MVP
    10 all star appearances

His 1st season with the Lakers he averaged 28 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocked shots a game. Arguably his best season.

The Lakers have such a vaunted history that it is tough to come up with a top 5 without leaving a truly great player out.

    My list would be:

    Magic
    Kobe
    West
    Kareem
    Mikan

    Next 5
    Shaq
    Baylor
    Wilt
    Worthy
    Byron Scott

I agree a lot with what Vito said. Here's my rankings:

    Magic
    West
    Kobe
    Kareem
    Baylor

There's a lot of folks that hate Kobe (me included), but you can't deny that his body of work with the Lakers exceeds that of Kareem and Wilt, who did a lot of their damage while playing for other teams.

  • somewhat different question

CAN kobe ever become the greatest laker

or is magic the greatest no matter what kobe does
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,252 ✭✭✭✭
I actually don't like him that much; but Kobe is the greatest. If he wants he may set the all time scoring mark. At times he is completely unstoppable. He can make any shot under any circumstance. He has that killer instinct that only Michael Jordan had.

Interesting you put Byron Scott. Great player no doubt. However, I think I would put Michael Cooper above him... and maybe even Jamal Wilkes. Cooper brought so much with the spark off the bench, great defense, etc....

  • Yeah-Scott was an iffy choice.

Like you said-Coop, Wilkes, Goodrich, Mcmillan, Hairston, Hundley, or even a Horry or Mike Thompson could take that spot.
