Super Bowl trivia

The Independent

For the first time, the final of the UEFA Champions League outdrew the Super Bowl in 2009 when the final between Barcelona and Manchester United was the most-watched sporting event of the year worldwide with 109 million viewers in its entirety compared to 106 million for the Super Bowl.

"That was Super Bowl's best ever figure, and as an event it's still growing," said Kevin Alavy, a director of international analyst Initiative. "Extraordinarily, the Champions League is growing faster, with room for further significant expansion."

Last season UEFA paid more than $807 million to the 32 Champions League finalists. That amount could exceed $990 million this season.

Pats Pack SB was a push. Casinos lost money due to quite a bit of middling and lost vig. Next thing you know, Vegas can't sell tix to SB parties. What does it all mean?

  • ABC's Superstars -

While in the NASL, Kyle Rote won the made-for-television Superstars competition three times in a four-year period in the 1970s.

From 1977 to 1979, Budd won three straight Canadian Superstars competitions. His victories earned him a spot in the annual World Superstars contests, produced by U.S. broadcasters ABC Sports, which Budd won each time. That prompted the creation of a rule barring anyone from competing in a Superstars competition after their third victory—unofficially called the "Budd rule." Budd believed that ABC wanted him removed from the show because he was not well known to the American TV audience. His total winnings from the Superstars contests were about $170,000.

This rule was broken by inviting track & field star Renaldo Nehemiah back after his 3rd win in 1983. No soccer players were invited after 1981.

ABC TV has since televised every FIFA World Cup Final since 1986 ...
