England- Tokens/Medals-

I have seen some of the copper/bronze tokens/medals from P. Kempson- maker of Buttons and Medals Birmingham.

I am very impressed with the quality of what I have seen.

I noticed that the Heritage Tokens/medals auction in 2008 had afew and they did quite well- how rare are these?

Just curious

Depends. Peter Kempson did several series of building and Gate medalets (Conder tokens) for collectors. These include buildings found in:
    Somersetshire Bath
    Warwickshire Birmingham
    Warwickshire Coventry
    Gloucestershire Gloucester
    London

All but the London Building and Gates series are halfpenny sized tokens.

The Birmingham medalets are the largest group of Kempson tokens, most are considered common, but there are quite a few scarce and rare tokens in the series.

Since they were made for collectors you should be able to find them in UNC condition, many of these tokens are found P/L with nice mirrored surfaces.

The engraver of the Kempson tokens was Thomas Wyon, and along with the Watt/Boulton tokens and the Milton tokens they may well represent the pinnacle of minting technology at the time.
