1984 Topps?

As a kid of 10 in the summer of 1984, it might be my single favorite set, closely followed by 1982 and 1983. As a way to recapture some of that collecting magic, I'm thinking about buying some wax and building a set this summer. Anyone want to join me? I'm thinking that we could talk to Steve at BBCX and each of us could get a couple of wax or vending boxes. We bust 'em open, then do some trading. It's not quite the same as sitting on your front stoop, but it's not too bad.

Anyone interested?

    Drew,

I rememeber in 1984 my dad suprised my brother and I with two vending cases of 84 topps BB. We busted one case and I believe we made 13 sets. Man, it felt like it took us 6 months to sort through all those cards. I can still remember when everyone would stop and look when one of us got a Mattingly or Strawberry rookie. I still have the second case at home. I will never open it but it is a reminder of good memories for me. He also bought a wax case that year and I spent the school year selling the packs at school.

Anyways, I would be in to doing this. Sounds like alot of fun.

Seconded, though my avatar is the most original here image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

My local dealer did a deal where he was selling Topps rack boxes for $20 bucks. I bought a few from him.... 1986-1991 to be exact. Though I probably could have gotten them cheaper delivered (maybe...maybe not), I trusted the source, and supported the local guy.

I went back a few weeks later, and he had 2 of those nondescript rack boxes that Topps did until 1986. I flipped them over, and they had the 1984 date on the bottom. I asked him if he meant to do that, and he said not exactly... but insisted that I buy them for $20 each.

I did. I opened one, and got one off center Mattingly and one Strawberry, but put most of the set together.

As for the other, well, it sat in the closet for a year... and maybe Santa took it from me and sent it out for the Secret Santa exchange. And maybe some SOB got 3 Mattinglys out of that rack box.

    Doh!

  • I too have memories of this year in collecting and I did the same thing last year, in which i bought two boxes of wax and busted them open thinking i wanted to complete the set. I haven't organized them yet but i'm thinking I will join you in this... keep me posted.
  • I just got 2000 nm-mt commons, once i sort them i could be of service
  • I think I have a boat load of 84's from a couple years ago. LMK if you need any I'll try to dig them out.
