Since I couldn't take a vacation this year... (warning: Large Pictures)

... I decided to use my vacation fund and buy another camera! Upgraded to Canon 5D Mark II.

Here are some quick shots I took to test the new camera with my old macro lens.

    Thin planchet?

Looks weak around part of the edge with an otherwise good strike.

    Nice, all of them!

Very nice images. I need to break down and get a new camera myself. If only I could stop buying coins.

Gary wins free cookies! 1842 8 Reales were struck with two very different reverse dies. I have always been a fan of 1825-1842 eagle and was happy to find this transition year in (what i think) is a nice condition for the type. Going to shoot it off to NGC and see what they have to say about it.

Gary, I will be willing to substitute cookies for a beer or two if our paths cross at any of the major coin shows image

Actually, it's a Spanish-Philippines peso, and I really like it too!

Roman, you have a deal! Imported, Imported of course! I hope that I recover sufficiently from my surgery during this year so that my show travel resumes. It would be my pleasure to pick up the second round! image

Relative world coin NEWB here and I'm looking in all of my books:

Silver Dollars of North and South America by Wayte Raymond
Eight Reales adn Pesos of the New World by Elizondo, Jr.

and I can't find examples of the two types of eagles that we're talking about here.

Can you give a book recommendation as well as a pic of each type?

    TIA,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,

Here's the Type II reverse, also known as "die style of 1842-1845".

If you're interested in the cap'n'ray 8 Reales series, you should get your hands on Resplandores: Cap and Rays 8 Reales of The Republic of Mexico 1823-1897. Great reference. It surfaces on eBay from time to time.

Thanks for the pic of the other reverse!

I have been a casual student of the Zacatecas 8 Reales, and never knew about the dual reverses.

It looks like some of the most obvious pick-up points (for me, anyway) are the snake's head, and the cactus at lower left. There are also differences in the leaves and berries.
