Jackie Robinson Autograph Value

Hi All,
I have had a Jackie Robinson autograph in my possession for about 10 years and I was wondering what it may be worth. The autograph is contained in a program from a "Sports World Dinner" that was held at the Waldorf Astoria in 1959. Jackie Robinson, Toots Shor and Ed Sullivan were being honored that night. I have attached pics and would love some feedback regarding both the collectability and value of this book. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Thats a interesting item you have there. One of the things I remember as a kid was watching Jackie throw out the 1st ball at the 1972 World Series in Oakland (on television of course). They said he was already blinded by that time because of diabetes and I believe he died a few weeks later. I find it a bit ironinc that this program was for the New York Association for the Blind and less than 13 years later jackie himself would be blind.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

Very cool item; I do recall once seeing a 1972 WS Program signed by Robinson at auction one time

  • Thanks vlad. At this point my primary concern is preserving it's quality. Also, my wife asked me whether or not we should get it authenticated and appraised. Any thoughts?

I believe the PSA/DNA or JSA fee is like $75 so unless you plan on selling I wouldn't bother, I would make sure you keep it in a acid/pvc free ultra pro magazine bag with acid free backer board. If you weren't aware, another aspect of this piece which makes it very desirable is the fact that the inscription and autograph would make a very nice "cut"... the process of cutting it out to have it slabbed in a index card size holder, puts more emphasis on the signature and adds protection than having it in a magazine. I personally would leave as is though. I could definitely see Topps or Upper Deck buying this to make a cut auto card, "Jackie Robinson" would be a great large size clean signature for them to use.

Just realized it's from 1959, definitely keep it as is and let someone else cut up a piece of history if you ever sell...

I have actually seen another fund-raiser program signed by Robinson and that one was at a Fargo,N.D. cardshow a few years back and it had full authentification papers,etc.. It sold for $650 as it was at the table next to me. In my opinion I believe it would be well worth being authenticated as if it is real(no doubts here-looks nice)it is a valuable piece. Just my opinion.
I have been collecting sports cards for 30+years.

nicer Robinson auto pieces sell for $1K, this would qualify as that +, how much more I can't say...
  • Nice piece. I would get it authenticated for sure for this reason, if you pass it on to someone and they decided to sell it, someone (a dealer) wouldn't try to take them for less money claiming it's not real. I have a few autographs that I have authenticated for that very reason. You want them to get the most out of it if they decide to sell. Doug

I see no reason to get it authenticated unless you plan to sell it. That's one of the finest JR signatures I've seen.

Here are realized auction prices for Jackie Robinson signed pieces from one of the premier autograph auction houses in the country, R&R Enterprises, run by Bob Eaton, a PSA/DNA authenticator. This should give you a general idea of what value you are looking at.

That's a GORGEOUS signature you have there. Congrats!

  • Just in case anyone wasn't aware, Heritage is always happy to provide free appraisals, and we have a huge database of auction results dating back to the 1999 Halper sale for all the major houses. But the R&R results work well for this topic, but obviously it's a handy guide only for autographs as that's all that R&R handles.

    Hi Ram and welcome!

    That's a beautiful Robinson sig - I like it!

A minor interest for me is the collection of autographed sports books.

    I don't mind personalized sigs.

But, to someone looking for a Robinson sig - IMO this is the least attractive - since it's personalized and signed "inside" and doesn't display as well.

Thanx for sharing - again very nice!

  • Not sure about the value... that is a thing of beauty!
  • Hi Everyone,
Thank you for your feedback on this piece! I must say that after spending the last few days on this site I have decided to dig out all of my cards from my younger days. My collection consists mainly of 1986-1994 baseball cards, but I do have a lot of early 90-91 Parkhurst hockey cards (french and english). The addition of the insert cards in modern packs certainly makes things more exciting for a me. I have a feeling that you will be hearing from me again very soon!!!!!
