1961 Phillies Cigar Mickey Mantle

I picked this card up - but to be honest - had never seen it before.

Back in 1961, Phillies Cigar company had redemption program where if ya sent in 20 cigars bands and $3.39, ya got this photo and a baseball glove.

I'm pretty sure some of you out there may have this, but it was new to me.

I paid 78 bucks for it Barry.

The Standard Catalog of BB has it listed as 1961 but I believe the promotion ran for a few years - it lists the picture - $125 nm.

It's kind of large - so I can see why some wouldn't want it (6.5x9"). It's a photo and not truly a card.

I'm sure that Mantle display piece would bring a pretty penny these days......

Actually, the Mantle photo/card will be going up in the 2011 catalog. A NM example in the October Collect.com auction sold for $216.

And it's a lot scarcer than that. Factors mitigating against it attaining even greater value are, as mentioned, its size, plus there is no indication of the issuer on the piece.

what size is it (standard PC size)?

Thanx for the kind words guys.

I concur with everything Bob said - I just reread the OP and realized I used the word "card" as such - which as I said in the 2nd post - it's a heavy stock photo card and relatively large.

As I/Bob stated - it's 6.5x9" - and as I alluded - probably not as popular - but for people like me who collect all kinds of stuff to include T3s - that's OK.

Plus, I'm gonna frame it - it does have a very slight crease inside the pic which the seller didn't mention; he's a reputable guy and I think it missed him - but to be honest - I bid accordingly - and I think the price was right for this rather rare but low demand item.

I'll probably pull the trigger on the ad page from a mag since I would probably never find it on my own by thumbing thru old mags in an antique store e.g.

Thanx for all the input - it's always nice when ya see something new (to me anyways)! image

    Thanx Steve

Had you ever seen this from your "shop" days?

Many have mistaken it for a 'team photo' or something - but usually team photos are not this large to my knowledge - the Yankee photos that I got in the 70s were more like 4x6?

  • Wow, more quality stuff from the Stone193 factory! I would love to own a copy of that Mantle. It would look great framed on the wall!

Did anyone see the lady who was a batboy for the Yankess in 1963 on the Antiques Road show last night? She had some awesome Mantle stuff -- including a bat he gave her after hitting a homerun! The estimate value of the bat alone was $35,000 if I remember correctly...

Sweet card. I have two of them...thought they might be from 1964. I also have a two page ad for it. Posted pics I think of it last year here. Will probably get them graded by PSA if they will grade it as I am grading my oddball Mantle's now. Striking image and nice color on this oversized card.

edit...I think too big for psa to grade

PSA currently does NOT have a holder large enough.

    Largest holder is the T-3 Holder - 5 3/4" x 8"

Thanks PoppaJ. I am also wondering if PSA will grade 1965 push pulls?

    Thanx king.

Based on the sale of ads for this product from '64 and '65 - and the fact that the Standard Catalog of BB lists it as 1961 tells ya either they're wrong on the date or the ad ran for a few years - perhaps during the season?

As I've said - this card - due to its size - is not popular - but one would think a "must" for the Mantle collector.

I'm planning on having the pic framed - and still not sure if I want to frame it with the ad or not - size will be the deciding factor since they don't charge tons more for a bigger frame.

There is a Phillies Cigars Mantle "card" in the Collect.com internet-only auction that closes tonight. Described as "NM except for tiny corner crease." Currently at $35. And, yes, in the interest of full disclosure, I am a consignment director for Collect.com auctions.
