What to do with this coin?

Hi All.

I recently purchased this no brainer from NEN for resale. Still waiting for it to arrive. Link

1.With the US market in mind, is it worth getting it reslabbed with the correct 1739/7 attribution?
2.If so how do you go about it and how much would it cost?
3.Would they actually consider reslabbing it for what it is and by default recognise their mistake?

For the record, this is the second best example I have seen. The best I have seen to date had just a trace of friction to the laurel leaves and a price tag to suit.

Thanks

    Hi Rob,

Sometimes third party grading services offer re-holdering for free if they make a mistake.
I don't know if this would fall under that category.

Re-slabbing won't cost much I think $30-$40 plus postage but someone else will be able to tell you a bit more accurately.
As I don't get coins slabbed that regularly.

The only thing is you have to be a member of the third party grading service (or I think the ANA for NGC) to submit coins.
The alternative, the one which I do is to send coins to a trusted member of this board to submit for me.

Would it be worth it - Yes I think so. If you want to sell it slabbed at the moment potential buyers have to take your word for it where as if it says it on the slab.. Also British coins are quite hot in the US right now and slabbed high end or rare coins do well a places like Heritage.

Alternatively you could crack it out and keep it raw, but if you want to keep it in the slab I would get it re-slabbed with the correct date.

I'm not looking to retain it as it doesn't fit in with my current requirements. If kept for the UK market I wouldn't bother changing anything. The grade wouldn't matter and neither would the attribution. It is just that one's attention becomes focused when you see a coin priced at about half of what it should be. It's seriously rare in good grade.

It definately is worth getting reattributed, NGC costs $10 to submit for variety designation.

Thanks JCM. I suppose the question that really needs answering is how much demand there would be in the US for a rare AU58 slabbed British coin. Collectors of expensive material obviously fall into 2 camps, those who are predominantly concerned with numbers but not a particular variety and those with a greater in-depth interest in a series where the number of coins available doesn't afford the opportunity to readily add only say 64s or higher to the collection. It is the latter who a resubmission would be aimed at, but I have no feeling for US demand which would be the only reason for reattribution.
  • In my limited experience, sight-unseen money (ebay, heritage, goldberg, etc) pays more for PCGS than NGC material right now. If you're going to pay the $30 for reholder postage, I'd just stake the full $50+ for a new PCGS holder. Nice pick!
