I think Mike Gartner is one of the most under-appreciated hocky players to ever lace up the skates. Andreychuk was pretty damn good as well.

I agree with Gartner being under-appreciated.

And, because I'm a Caps fan - I'd put him #1 from this list

    Then probably:
    Leetch
    Gilmour
    Andreychuk
    Fuhr
    Mullen
    Taylor

Card-wise, I'd go for Gartner's OPC first and then probably Fuhr.

    good question! my opinion:

    Fuhr (no brainer for #1)
    Straight from wiki:
Named to NHL Second All-Star Team in 1982
    Stanley Cup Champion 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990
    Canada Cup Champion 1984, 1987
Named to NHL First All-Star Team in 1988
    Won Vezina Trophy in 1988
Won William M. Jennings Trophy in 1994 (shared with Dominik Hašek)
    Participated in NHL All-Star Game in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 (MVP), 1988, 1989
In 1997, he was ranked number 70 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players.[3]

Leetch (Cup winner w/ Conn Smythe, Norris twice I think)
Gilmore (cup, holds numerous Leafs records...which is a major honor)
    Mullen (Lester Patrick winner)
Gartner no cup, but more valuable to his team than...
    ...Andreychuk, who has a cup
    Taylor, eh.

I would venture to say Grant Fuhr, as a goalie, is in a separate class - goalies always are. I'd rate him top of this group as well.

    Further then -

Joe Mullen - star power during the 1990's is tough
    Dave Andreycuk - durbabilty, leadership
Mike Gartner - anything Caps is hoy right now - he was Wash's 1st star player
    Doug Gilmour - honorable mention

    i don't rate the rest
  • I think another underated guy was Mike Bossy... check out his stats and total games played.

Yes, Gartner is the most underappreciated on the list. Had he played in NY, Toronto, Montreal, etc his rookie would be much more popular than it is. Look at Gilmour: he didn't start to become popular in the hobby until he left Calgary and had his miraculous seasons with Toronto 1992-1994. (His '84 OPC went from something like $4-5 to $50-$60 in a matter of months.) Fuhr and Mullen, unfortunately, had rookies in the overproduced '82 OPC set (and Mullen, like Gartner, never really played in the spotlight- aside from winning the Cup in '89). Leetch's rookie also would have been better appreciated had it been in '88; not '89.
