Al or Bob might have some specific knowledge -- I believe it is just one or two sheets that have some blackless issues. I know this issue has been discussed here previously.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Bob....for once ...maybe right . You can find them with gray lines and signatures, where the black ink had not yet run out. There used to be disputes...at least in some quarters ..about whether "gray ghosts" were true blackless, or some in between other thing .
The guy who knows the most about these, and was selling and pushing them back in the mid 80s, no longer sells direct on ebay. His ebay idea zenithium, and I think you can still contact him through that identity through e bay. If so, I think you will find him most generous with his knowledge about them. If you look under current blackless listings on ebay now, the descriptions used by the seller salscards were written by Fred, zenitium.
396 cards on the A, B and C sheets were involved, although Fred believes there are 4 variations within that subset that make a complete blackless set 400. I think Bob and I decided to be satisfied with our sets at 396. Of the 3 sheets the As are easiest to find. Cs and some of the Bs are very hard. Henderson seems to be the toughest star. I think Ryan was an A, but is still tough and expensive because of demand. The As seem to have been distributed in packs in the NY area. The Cs seem to have showed up in packs mostly in Michigan
I have some very detailed info I have received from Fred over the years on blackless ( Bob and I had to use several sellers to get the sets done, but Fred knows the most of all the sellers I dealt with). If you can not contact zenithium through e bay, I would be happy to send you a copy of what I got from him. But if you can contact him, you will never find someone more passionate about a "set" of cards. He also knows a good deal about the 85 Topps Minis and the Topps 84 Encased proof sets

<< <i>Does anyone collect or have knowledge of how this variation came about in the 1982T issue? >>
I do not. I assume that it was just a DANG-WE-RAN-OUT-OF-BLACK-INK-DON'T-TELL-ANYONE type of problem.
