1953 Great Britain Shilling Proof: PCGS 66 Scot Reverse

Coin appears to meet grade; nice color.

Anyone have an idea of what a fair price would be for it?

Not trying to sell it; considering a bid.

Regards and thanks
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.

  • From the photo there appears to be some cameo; maybe not deep cam, but obvious.

    Color is gorgeous....

I would make an un-educated guess and say $150.00.
  • They go on ebay for $12-15 raw, which is about all you would need to pay a dealer. Don't forget these all came from broken sets so have seen no circulation.

Well a PR64CA would be about $30 and a PR64 about $15 so they're not really worth slabbing at that grade however a 66CA would be a better than average example of the type and command some premium.

I wouldn't buy an already slabbed '53 proof (unless it was dirt cheap - even a 66). Sets and individual pieces are still pretty easy to find and are pretty affordable.

I don't mind slabbing coins or buying slabbed coins like, say 1869 halfpennies, or even 1903 sixpences, but this angle doesn't make much sense to me.

  • Yep, they're pretty cheap all right, and plenty of them out there.

I'm figuring it will be a challenge, though, to put together a high grade,
    nice color toned set.

I have a particular interest in doing it since I spent a couple of years in the UK
in the early 50's and stood with the crowds watching Elizabeth's coronation.

We have a very special grand daughter that I'm going to enjoy putting a nice
    set together for.

Maybe it will be worth something when she reaches my age image

I am not the expert on the Elizabeth UK coinage- To pay decent money, I think some type of cameo designation is needed-

If no cameo, I think I would agree with Wybrit

I think I stumbled across the coin you are referring to. Looks nice, but I'm sure you can do better for much less money.
  • I think I'm going to mess with it Bill.

If you run into any nice Elizabeth 11 proof shillings I'd appreciate the tip.

  • Incidentally if you're looking at the same coin; I put an offer out at about 1/3 rd the asking price.

The offer expired without a response....image
