1971 Clemente...What grade do you think??

Here is my raw 1971 Clemente. What grade do you think it will get? I brought it to a show and a dealer offered me $200 on the spot for it. After I said no he jumped it to $300. I still said no but after thinking about it, I went back to get the $300 but he picked out that it is off center and said he would give $100. Using the force I sensed somnething was wrong and I walked away.

    Shoulda taken the $200

Forgot to add Grade: PSA 6
  • 6 or 7. Too much chipping and off-centered. Still a keeper

I should of taken the $300 but he offered it way too fast so I thought he was trying to pull a fast one. He looked kinda shady, Oh well, I still have the card.

  • With the chipping, bottom left corner and centering, PSA 7 is the best grade you could ever hope to get. A PSA 7 '71 Clemente will typically run you $80-$100.
You definitely should have taken the $200.

Still a great card. Very nice photo and color!

Should have taken the cash. Probably not a 7, but not a bad looking card though. Here is a PSA 7 for comparative purposes:

Don't feel bad, I've learned a lot in the past two years. You still have a very nice Clemente card and a story to go with it.

I also say 6.5. The bottom corners are a bit weak and there is quite a bit of chipping on the borders.
As far as centering, I measure it VERY close to 65/35 L/R.

  • Years ago I had a Ryan rookie that I was offered 2k for (Pre PSA and when nice Ryans were selliong for about 1k). I passed. A couple of years later I sold it for 1k. A few months later PSA became popular. I am sure it would have been an 8 and believe it had a real shot at a 9. It was dead centered and not a spec on the corners under 10x magnification. Oh well, live and learn.

Live and learn is right. Wish I still had my 1940 Playball Joe DiMaggio that would have surely scored a 7.5 or an 8 from PSA. Sold it before grading was popular for 1K. oh well............Oh yeah and lets not mention the T3 Ty Cobb I could have had if I had the $1,500.00 to pay for it, again before grading became popular........and this in no doubt would have been an PSA 8 without question. It was superb!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm confused. You were offered $200 from a dealer for the Clemente card? What dealer would offer $200 for that? Did this card ever get graded?

agree with the above - 7 at best, probably a 6 or 6.5

btw - that slabbed 7 shown for comparison is a very nice card. 30 years ago everyone would have shouted 'MINT!!'
