AABA (All-American Basketball Alliance)

KK Posts: 1,364 ✭✭✭
I heard something on the radio this morning that to me was pretty shocking.

All-American Basketball Alliance

I personally can't believe that stuff like this still exists in this country.

It almost sounds like a hoax.

    I can not imagine that this new league will be successful financially simply because once the novelty wears off attendance at games will drop and revenues will wither. For the players who participate, the games will be fun. I mean a gym rat is a gym rat and will play for free anywhere, just to play the game he loves.

    I suspect that if instead of the league being set up as white, American citizen, players only it was set up as:

    1. Native American players only [basketball is huge on Indian reservations and Indian leagues have been around for decades, with tournaments and championships galore];

    2. Black American players only;

    3. Latino American players only;

    4. Asian American players only;

    5. Handicapped players only;

    6. Women players only;

    7. Foreign players only; and/or

    8. Muslim, Buddhist, Shinto, Hindu, etc. players only; and/or

    9. Under 6' players only

    there would be little to no criticism made about the league.

    However, announce that it is White American citizen players, or even worse Christian or Jewish players only and watch out. Can't not have that, no, no, no. Simply not allowed.

    If equality of opportunity is not good enough and only equality of result [everyone is the same, is treated the same and is rewarded the same, regardless of how much work or lack of work one puts into the endeavor] is to be desired, then bring on all of the "Affirmative Action" plans you can, including a White Only League or a White Player Quota System in basketball. Do the same for running backs, wide receivers, defensive backs, track, field sprinting events and Rap. Include a Non White Player Quota system in the NHL, Swimming, Skiing, Ice Skating, bobsled, curling, ice fishing in Minnesota and Wisconson and Country Music.

    My sister is 55 years old, white with a high school diploma and is retiring this month from 33+ years of being a Federal Government worker (GS 8 I believe). She told me that if she was in her 20's again and tried to get a job as a federal government worker today, she would never get one as a high school graduate only because of one thing and one thing only, specifically "white" color of her skin.

    Interesting that you didn't didn't include "Jewish players only" in your list? political correct in your part? Since they have a long history.

    And aren't you trying to play the race card yourself? With your sister with only a High School diploma saying she would not get a Federal government job today with the Federal Government. Could it be her job now requires some college education?

    Also interesting that this league hoax/publicity stunt comes out basically during the time we remember Martin Luther King.

    this has got to be the dumbest idea Ive ever heard.

    Can't these guys play in a weekend Rec league like every other 5'9" white guy who's Junior HS coach didn't give him enough playing time? Who is going to pay to watch this garbage? It will be like the WNBA, except all guys.

    Mexisar.

    My post was not an attempt to play the race card. I was merely pointing out that if this new league was something other than "white american born" player only, it would not receive the media attention that it has and will receive.

    I think the league, if it ever gets off the ground, will fail financially. I think the idea of a league that allows "____________ only" [fill in the blank] is offensive and insulting. If it advertises "white only" that is offensive and insulting. If it develops a fan base, some of them will probably be racists [though some may just like watching basketball].

    If white, American born players want to get spots on NBA rosters, they should get off their behinds and work at their game as hard and as long as do the non white and foreign players on NBA rosters.

    If a woman has the athletic ability and hoop skills to play in the NBA, more power to her.

    If a 4' 3" basketball player has the athletic ability and hoop skills to play in the NBA, more power to him.

    If a one armed basketball player has the athletic ability and hoop skills to play in the NBA, more power to him.

    Same thing goes for other sports.

    Same thing goes for brain surgeons, rocket scientists, opera singers, piano players, actors, actresses, super models, Wall Street CEO's, etc. If you love what you do and work hard enough at it, you may just make it to the top of your field. If so great for you. If not, well you gave it your best and just was not good enough. Go do something else.

    What is obnoxious is the concept that just because of the color of one's skin, your gender, etc., you are given by society, government, business, academia, etc. a job, a position or a benefit that you are not qualified for and that you do not deserve.

    Equal opportunity yes.

    Equal outcome no.

    However, if equal outcome is the goal which society demands be met, then make it equal all the way around.

    Affirmative action and quotas should be put in place across society so that each position in society is proportionately allocated according to demographics (i.e. skin color, ethnic background, etc.).

    For example if blacks make up 15% of the US population, latinos make up 25%, asians make up 22%, whites make up 35% and other makes up 3%, then NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, Track and Field, US Olympic Team, NCAA, High School, Little League, Pop Warner, the Military, the Government at all levels, private businesses, schools, colleges, universities, NASA rocket scientists and engineers, etc., etc. should be staffed with:

    15% blacks,

    25% latinos,

    22% asians,

    35% whites and

    3% others

    regardless of whether or not the individuals filling these positions have the willingness or ability to competently perform.

    Even though I would not want to have anything less than a brilliant and gifted brain surgeon to operate on anyone, if equal outcome is the most important goal, then what the heck, have brain surgery handled by Joe Schmo or Jane Schmo who barely graduated high school with a D- average and who got his/her medical license from an on line medical school located in Outer Slobovia that advertises for students on matchbook covers. I am sure many would want to be first in line to be operated on the Dr. from OUter Slobovia, since they are more "comfortable" with his skin color or ethnic background than they would be with the top brain surgeon in the country who just happen to have white skin.

    As far as my sister goes, she merely told me what the reality of today is with respect to hiring new employees at the government agency that she works for. I have no reason to not believe her. She told me that people with white skin need not apply and that they will not be offered any positions.

    I really like MLK's famous speech about him having a dream about a day when we are not judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. If only his dream would come true.

    Unfortunately we are no closer to realizing his dream today than we were 40+ years ago when he made it.

    If anything we are regressing since the politics of division along racial, ethnic and other lines is becoming more and more the norm, instead of becoming extinct.

    Sanction,
    With all due respect, I disagree with your assertion that we are no closer to achieving Dr. King's dream than we were 40 years ago. The election of Barack Obama is proof that Americans are becoming more concerned with one's character than skin color.

    The election of Barak Obama had nothing to do with race. It just showed that people WERE NOT concerned about character. Read his books and look at who he associated with. The man is a socialist

    I am pretty sure that the Great White Hoops are a spoof.

    ........

    Outside of organized sports, "race relations" are in the worst
    state that they have been in at anytime during my lifetime.

    I do not care about President Obama's skin color, ethnic background, religion, etc. Same way I feel about all previous and all future presidents.

    What I do care about is the position of any politician on the proper role of government. IMHO limited government powers = more freedom, liberty and opportunity for all members of society. Each person in our society should use their own talents and energies to care and provide for themselves, their families and their communities. Doing so will result in a happier and more fulfilling life.

    Greater government powers [the nanny state where government dictates every facet of your life from cradle to grave] = less freedom, liberty and opportunity.

    Unfortunately the current administration in the White House, the majority party in Congress; and their state and local counterpart in large portions of the Country all tend to advocate the government as the solution to everything. Prior administrations [including W's] did the same thing.

    The Dems and the Repubs are all out for the same thing; an increase in their political and personal power, with an ever greater portion of the members of society going from cradle to grave with their hands out saying to the government "gimme" instead of taking care of themselves.

    I do not know whether the President is a socialist, but a lable does not matter. Our president is pushing hard to change the very foundation upon which the USA was founded [limited government and free market capitalism]. Can't wait until November 2012 so the voters have a chance to replace the current administration with another one. same thing for November 2010 and the mid term congressional elections.

    And I still think the "white, american born" basketball league is offensive and that it will fail financially.

    The types of people who are complaining about Obama now are probably similar to those who complained about the social programs that FDR enacted during the Great Depression. In fact, there are pockets of society who believe that FDR was partially responsible for the Great Depression, neglecting the fact that it began years before he took office. There is nothing more pathetic than those who seek to revise history in order to support their own particular political agenda.
