I was wondering-how of you have never received a PSA 10 on a submission? I have not, but nearly all of my cards are from 59-72. I have received precious few 9s.

I submit almost exclusively baseball from 1970s and have gotten a couple PSA 10 1973 OPC, two PSA 10 1975 minis (one a pop 1/1 and the other 1/2), a couple PSA 10 1975 OPCs, and a fair number of PSA 10s from 1978-1980.

Edit to add: all the 10s I've gotten were from cards I pulled from unopened wax/rack packs.

21 subs of mainly vintage HOF football with no 10's, a few 9's. Someday it will happen.

I've subbed cards ranging from 1940 to 2009, but a large percentage come from the 80s and 90s. My oldest 10 was a 1980 Carlton Fisk. The most valuable grade I've ever received was a 1959 Topps Bart Starr in PSA 9. It was a beautiful card. I think it sold for around $900.

I've submitted anything from 1953 parkhurst hockey up to 1978 OPC hockey. Never had anything above a 9 and don't think I ever will.

I got a 69 topps baseball, 73 topps basketball, and many 78 basketball's just last August

they sprinkle around here and there

unless you're subbing modern where the whole sub may 10!

I started subbing cards in 1999. Back then I had no loupe. I would just go over them with my naked eye and sub the cards with the best centering and no corner dings. I actually got more 10s back then than I have received in the past 5 years, with my loupe.

I have many 9's of the years also but then I've had some 6's and 7's for what reasons???? I don't know.

Have submitted 100's of 1979 Topps hockey the last few years and no tens. 10% 9's if I'm lucky. Doesn't seem to matter if they're pack fresh either.

I have bought 9's and 10's from some of the biggest dealers and have found the cards are way over graded in some cases.

If I look at the population reports for the 79 Topps hockey cards there aren't many high graded cards available so I shouldn't feel bad.

Selling a PSA 10 right now on Ebay that is horrible.

Me too. My subs have been from '57-'72 and I've never gotten a 10. Truthfully, there's only been one card that I've subbed which I thought should have gotten a 10. It was a 1972 Topps Charlie Taylor #334, which got a 9.

I used to scan every cards and zoom in on all the corners and edges and they always came back 9's with a few 10's. The cards I seem to send in as throw ins always seem to get higher grades and of the limited number of 10's I have received, half were afterthoughts. Those are the best though because you have no expectations.

I have received 2 PSA 10's from the 1961 Fleer World Series pennant decals and 1 PSA 10 from 1966 Marvel Super Heroes.

I think PSA totally misses the boat on grading 79's.

Until this last November special, I had never received a 10 and was close to throwing in the towel. But I got two 78 FB Preston Pearsons, an 87D Maddux which I sold last week, an 80T Orioles Rookies (which I really wanted), and 80 Topps FB Matt Robinson, a 77 Star Wars card, an 89 Score Derrick Thomas and yes, what everybody wants, a 1977 Three's Company Chrissy Sticker. Took submitting 65 cards but it felt good and now they got me on the hook.

Have sub'd about 9-10K cards, 99 % pre 1990, 90% pre 1970. Have recieved hundreds of 10's from 1930's stuff to 1989.
This may sound like an oversimplification, but you get what you sub. Period. There are some Vintage sub's that I know I am not going to get any 10's, that's cause I am subbing them for the 6, 7, 8's, cause those sell. There are other sub's that have to be 10's or they aren't worth the sub fees, and for the most part have done 30-70% 10's when they pop. The longer you take pre-grading your cards and the more Honest you are with yourself, the better grades you will get. I generally go through my cards before they go into the envelope to PSA a minumum of 4 times.

One of the best sub's I ever had was a Lot of 4000 1987/88 Pack fresh Fleer Basketball cards, I went through them 5 times and got it down to 68 cards, of the 68 I got 33 10's, and 35 9's. Visually there was no difference between the 10's and 9's, but anything but Modern PSA will not give a super high percentage of 10's, just part of the game.

Been doing this for a lot of years and except for the occasional massacre, I pretty much get what I expect.

IME it's almost impossible to predict PSA 10s. Most of those I've received have been surprises on cards where I expected a 9. It seems whenever I say "this should definitely get a 10" it invariably comes back 8.5

Even better was a PSA9 R21 1937 Wolverine Gum Ripley's BION card. What made that one special was that was the first & only PSA9 ever from the whole set. In other words a Pop. 1 of 1 with none higher in the entire set. One PSA9 for the whole set - no 10's

That's like my MINT 9 Ava Gardner card for the 1953 Topps Who-Z-At Star card set. The one and only 9 ever given with no 10's for something like 1300 cards sub'd.

My best 10's I gotten have been 1985 Fleer Puckett RC, and 1989 Score Aikman... Got some other 10's but the oldest has been 1981... I have a bunch going in the group sub from the late 70's which I hope at least 1 is a 10...

When I first started to sub, I would look and say think is a x... Now I also look at the cards 1) no loupe look at centering only. 2) get out the loupe and check the corners and edges. Put in a piles Yes, Maybe, No. Pick the cards up again at another time, and go through this process again... It is amazing what you miss the first time. Then before I pack, I look for the hidden indents, wrinkles, etc... Has improved my subs to getting more 9's then the 8's I was getting at first.

Never received a 10.

I've submitted a total of 18 cards (3 member yrs - obviously not a big sub'er of cards) - not including T3s and they've all been older stuff - so I've been more than happy to receive a 9!

Best sub'ed to get a 9 that I recall?

1961 Fleer #46 IA Baylor, 75T #500 Ryan, 83T Ryno RC, 82T Rip RC, 89OPC Sakic RC, 60T common - if that's it - that would be 7 out of 18 - I can live with that.

I would say - it would be rare to get a 10 on truly vintage - some issues of modern are tough!

I picked out a 2003-04 Topps Lebron James Rookie card out of a glass case at my local card shop here in Anaheim and it came back a 10

also while building my raw '68 Topps Baseball set I picked out the six for your free submission , Bob Saverine #149 came back a 10 , #225 Richie Allen came back a 9 ,

My first submissions were crap. My last submission was 16 cards and I got 5 10's. Not too bad. On the last one I went through a vending box of OPC hockey and picked out the 30 best and then sorted through those and picked 7 10's, of which I got the 5 and 2 9's. I think I'll do better from here on in (at least as far as 10's goes). My stuff I just sent to Bill has no tens in it. No chance.

thedutymon is right when he says that you have to be honest with yourself. Do whatever you can to remove your own bias.

Beyond the agonizing pre-grading I do myself, I have housemate who sort of follows my collecting and I always ask him to do a once-over on the cards I'm submitting before I send them in. I tell him to find the 3-6 worst ones in the group and take them out of the pile. The system works. Last sub was 24 cards and half were tens.

I'd also suggest acquiring multiple copies of the same card if you can afford it. The more familar you get with an issue, the better you will become at grading it yourself.
