What size loupe do PSA graders use?

Does anyone know what (if any) jewelry loupe PSA graders use when grading? Is is 10x,20x,?? Thanks.

  • It really doesn't matter...just pray that the person who's grading your cards on any given day is in a good mood.

  • That's probably a very true statement. I have some fairly high dollar cards in 9s which I am very tempted to break out and submit. I just want to make sure it's not something I can't see with the naked eye.

Seems like there was a FAQ published by Joe O a few years ago that addressed that question. I recall him saying that on MOST cards, they do not use a loupe to grade.

    I thought is was a 10x.

  • They prob use a loupe when they get to the more expensive cards. I just dont see them paying the same attention to a 2010 Derek Jeter than a 1952 Mickey Mantle.

In the June 2007 issue of SMR, page 14, Joe Orlando, in a column called "Card Grading & Urban Legend" states:

"... the vast majority of cards are graded with the naked eye."

    And...

"Graders will measure the card if they think the card needs to actually be measured."

Could you expand on that? Why in the world would you crack out high dollar nines?

Rember, it's not the size of your loupe, it's what you can do with it that really matters!
