GAI packs "from sealed case"

Can anyone tell me what it means when a GAI graded pack says "from a sealed case"? Does this mean GAI opened a verified sealed case themselves and graded the packs right then and there? Thanks for any info.

From what I've heard and experienced myself with GAI; whatever they say is meaningless. GAI seriously put a major hurt on the hobby. I would not buy any GAI packs.
  • If it is an old GAI flip it should be OK.

GAI used to (may still) grade boxes or packs that were pulled from factory sealed cases. I believe the removal of the packs/boxes had to be either done by or in the presence of the grader.

Thanks, I was looking at some such 1975 Topps packs on ebay right now from a seller named "craveking". From what I have read then, these look like "newer" flips. So, am I better off staying away?
  • PSA needs to do this,I'd buy tougher 80's wax all day if they did!

Rookie ... as someone who used to have hundreds of graded unopened packs from all years, I would never purchase any GAI pack that did NOT have the first edition flip. JMO, but I think many pack collectors think the same way.

Stay away from the new flips.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

  • There are of course some "good" Gai packs with the newer generation flips but your odds of obtaining a "bad" pack is much higher with the newer flips as opposed to the very first generation Gai flips beginning with serial #'s 100 & 101.

As a whole I agree with other members and I would just simply stay away from pack in newer generation flips--too much of a gamble.

Nonsense. GAI is a PSA knockoff. Mike Baker grades everything at GAI, and he trained most of the graders that work at PSA today. GAI is just as reputable as PSA.

BS. Mike did not grade everything at Global, I've been in the grading room and seen the line of graders. And Mike would not have pass those reglossed '55 Bowmans, or any of their other debacles. He was busy running the show and could not have possibly graded everything- and the talent pool dropped off severely after him. He also didn't grade packs- that was left to a revolving door of often incompetents. Can you say '72 grocery cello?
As far as Mike training all the graders at PSA, I find that hard to believe as well. He and Rocchi and Danny left early in '04, you mean to tell me there has been absolutely no turnover at PSA in 6 years?

I've opened a boatload of GAI graded packs over the last few years (virtually all in the silver flip) and have encountered very few questionable or resealed packs. As with anything else, it pays to do your homework and to know who you're buying from and/or the source of the packs.

  • Most reputable dealers know to go to PSA with their wax packs now. Yes,unfortunately GAI made a practically fatal mistake of doing a disappearing act in 2007 which has caused a lot of rift with their integrity. A few key individuals also had a falling out with GAI. There are some nice packs on eBay right now that I'm itching to buy myself and some are in newer GAI flips. That'll be a later post though as to the opinion of the sellers.

I dont know how much Mike has graded in the past. But i just talked to him about 5 weeks ago, and he told me he grades every card NOW. And he is the one who also told me he trained almost every grader that works at psa today.

I'd be very surprised if that were the case. As Griffins stated, GAI has literally had a revolving door of pack graders since they first launched with Mark Murphy on board about 7-8 years back. As I said above, it pays to do your homework and to know what you're buying and where it came from. The 1975 mini wax packs that the OP was referring to originated from Steve Hart and were graded around the same time that Steve sold a sealed case to us on this board several years back.

  • BLS,tell Mike he should focus on grading boxes from unopened cases. I'm always looking for those boxes.

Joe-to answer your question, a GAI rep will inspect a factory sealed case to ensure the seals are untampered. Once that is done, the boxes and/or packs would be graded and slabbed by them.
  • This what I was told by Mike Baker at the 2nd to last Philly show. Mike Baker grades the cards, Demain Werner grades the wax items. They are the new owners of GAI.

I myself am done with GAI.

That tells me that NOT TOO MANY cards are going to GAI.

back to the original question, I don;t think you will have any problem with those packs that you referenced. those were graded at a time when it made sense for someone to grade a case of minis. there are many minis and boxes of minis that have that notation on the label.

Probably true. I'm sure they lost ALOT of volume since becoming GLOBAL AUTHORITY.
