Tim Lincecum files for ONLY $13 million in arbitration

Some writers and experts were tossing around $20 million as Tim's potential asking price. $13 mil sounds like a bargan. The Giants countered with $8 mil.

By asking for $13 mil, I get the feeling that either Tim is starting at a safe, low number, or he's being nice and not trying to tick off the GM of the team he wants to spend his career with. image

Either way, I suspect that Tim's going to set a new arbitration record. Since Tim likes the idea of going year-to-year with his contracts, he'll get to go to arbitration again next year, and get even more money if he has another elite season.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think he's low-balling himself with $13 million.

If he asked for $20 million, he'd probably get it, because he's worth it.

I guess the way he thought was if I put in a $20 Million number, I MIGHT lose and end up with the $8M.

By putting in a VERY REASONABLE NUMBER (boy, it's hard to call $13,000,000.00 a REASONABLE # .. lol) he KNOWS he won't lose!

Sounds like a "hometown discount." Sounds like he likes it there and may want to stay.

Early in the off-season, Lincecum commented that he'd be interested in a multi-year deal. Shortly there after, he was presented with another Cy Young Award. Pretty soon after that, I guess he consulted with his agent, changed his tune and asked for the 1 year contract again. I've also read that the Players Union had contacted Lincecum and TOLD him what to do, since Lincecum is sure to break the arbitration record.

  • $13 mil for a guy who went Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, Cy Young? Giants need to sign that deal yesterday!

No, a RoY is something that Tim does not have. In fact, Tim didn't even get a single vote in the 2007 RoY voting. He was still pretty raw back then, but showed flashes of brilliance.

I guess that TL, with his:

    1. success on the diamond;

    2. young age; and

3.earnings potential both on and off the field

will result in him being (even more so than the past two years) quite the "Man About Town" in the "City By The Bay" and surrounding environs.

Ya think he has any trouble getting the attention of women between the ages of 18-50?

This is just a hunch, but I do know some players intentionally take less money than they're worth in order for the team to afford other top players in order to better contend for a championship. Perhaps he's doing the same?

agreed, they are like winter and summer....alike in some ways, but oh so much different.....especially if you live on the shores of lake erie.....
  • And to think the Mariners passed up on him during the draft. He only went to U of W in Seattle - and I'm not even a mariners fan!!

He reminds me of Pedro in Montreal. Short, small frame, and throws the heck out of the ball. I'd say he would have won any arbitration case asking for anything below 15 mil.
