I normally use a pocket knife.

Using the tip of the knife, carefully and gradually score the edges of the holder (the gap between the two halves of the holder. Once you've worked it so that you can get the knife all the way through the weld, and starting at the top (so that if you push too hard and the knife goes too deep into the holder, you don't damage the card), work the knife all the way around the holder until the two halves come apart.

Personally, I take pliers and break off one of the corners and then use a small screwdriver to gently separate the slab halves.

Exactly what I do. Very effective.

I've done it a few different ways and I've found this way to be most effective and repeatable without incident...

And I'd assume one of the TOP corners, obviously.

I've got a '62 Babe Ruth card (8 ST) with wax on the front I'd like to break out and re-sub. Thanks for the tip on cracking.

I've only cracked a few, but the cleanest way I have found is as follows:

Put the card, on its side, in a vice.

put a chisel in the groove on the side of the slab by the label

give it one decent smack with the hammer

do the same to the other side

you can then use the chisel and slide it around the opening in the slab

it opens up quite easily and very clean. Almost too clean.

This card was cracked out and sent to Mr. Pafko for signature.

    Unfortunately it came back "RTS"

I put it back n the slab.

i've done it by simply shoving a flathead screwdriver into the top seam and just giving a few gentle twists across the top, which has popped it open enough to complete the job with the same technique all around the holder....i had lived in mortal fear of doing damage, but thanks to the advice of forum members here from past threads, i've had great success in the crack/resub game. image

I would feel better if it was not possible to do this.

I use wire cutters instead of pliers to ship the corner. Watch your eyes tho!

Heres one of the ways I do it. This is by no means the only method. DISCLAIMER: This is offered for entertainment purposes only, and I'm not responsible if you choose to try this and screw up your card. image

Same here. Only damaged one but that was because I dropped it on the floor afer removing it.

Method doesn't work as well for BGS/BVG slabs.

SGC can be cracked with your hands with no tools.
