Things took a terrible turn for the worse tonight and I had to take her to the emergency room a couple hours ago. She could no longer stand up or walk. I noticed something different as soon as I got home tonight. I couldn't let her go on like that. I think it was more age doing this than any of her illnesses over the last 9 months

First time I've had to go through putting an animal to sleep. It was so peaceful for her though. Not sure if it really has sunk in that she's not going to be greeting me at the door anymore but I can't ever remember crying like I did on the way home a little while ago.

RIP Turbo - I'll never stop thinking about you

Sorry for your loss. Our pet companions are worth more than their weight in gold. RIP Turbo. I don't know if you've done anything with the body yet, but I found out when I lost my wallaby that pet cremations are quite reasonable and you can keep their remains in a nice keepsake box or urn or sprinkle them over their favorite areas.

    Thanks guys

She fought a great battle these last 9 months. I didn't keep updating this thread every time something happened. But she had been to the vet about 6 times and each time it seemed like the end for her and within a couple weeks was bouncing back again.

This time, I believe it was pure old age taking it's toll on her and like I've been told, most pet owners know when it's time. It was time to let her go.

She had a wonderful, spoiled life here on earth. She knew it and enjoyed every minute of it. The memories will last a lifetime. She was truly a 1/1

wow, Mike - I'm so sorry to hear that Turbo's gone. I lack the perspective of having lost a close family member, so until that happens, I can state without reservation that having to be there while a beloved animal is put down is the worst emotional pain I've ever felt.

    RIP Turbo

FWIW, I'm right behind you. My lab mix-- who, incidentally, is my CU handle's namesake-- will be checking out shortly as well. Putting down pets is a real drag. I thought losing my dad was a bummer, but when you're the one who has to haul them off for that final car ride the whole process assumes an entirely new dimension of pain.

We recently had some friends who lost their four year old daughter, so that really put this whole issue in perspective. But that doesn't change the fact that hauling your pet off on that final hayride to the vet can really ruin your week.

Sorry for your loss. I still keep a photo of my favorite Monster cat that passed away about 15 years ago. His name was Jasper and all male. For Largeness reference, the old Magnavox stereo from the 50's behind him is 3' feet wide. Last weigh in was 28lbs. His head was about the size of a softball. Thats a 8 month old cat playing with it's tail. Sure do miss the big guy in my lap. Used to make my leg fall asleep. he took care of the gopher problem next door at a local church we lived by.

    Zep -

I am very saddened to hear of Turbo's passing. I missed the original thread, and reading it all tonight has brought tears to my eyes. Dogs are man's best friend - and I love the good puppy dog - but cats have a will to survive that is unmatched. You better believe that Turbo hung tough these last 9 months because she wasn't ready to say goodbye to you. That's how they show their love - by being there. I feel terrible for your loss, but heartened by the love of the last 17 years.

It's ironic this happened today. I've had 2 other friends lose pets in the last 10 days (one cat, one dog), and this weekend marks the 15th anniversary that my beloved childhood cat Junior passed away. He passed away on September 19, 1995. The amazing thing about him was that for 10 of his 13 years on this earth, he had 3 legs. He survived being struck by a car and we had to amputate his left front leg, but he motored on for ten solid years and taught everyone in our family a lesson in resiliency. He was, as you put it about Turbo, my little buddy. Always there for me. I wish I had a good picture to scan for the board, when he was near the end his blood count got so low the vet was astonished that he was still alive and told me, "he's hanging on for you, they do that."

I share the view of others here that the emotional pain of losing an animal can cut much deeper than losing a family member. It's a different kind of pain. You don't have the why or the how or the myriad of emotions......it just plain sucks and it hurts real bad. But that shouldn't stop us from enjoying their company. Now I have an 8 year old diabetic cat who is my buddy and I'll do anything I can to keep him here as long as I can and as long as he's comfortable.........here he is, I love him to death and dread the day when he passes on.

Zep - The emotional attachment with our pets is surprisingly strong. I have cried myself over losing our cat and then I had to tell my daughter.

    Sorry for your loss

  • Sorry to hear of this traumatic event in your life, Zep. I'm not a big pet person (while living in the city anyway), but it's so hard NOT to get emotionally involved with the pets we've had. The trip we made to the vet to have our dog put down several years ago was one of the most emotional things our family has faced over the years. Currently we have my son's cat, Rufus, which he couldn't keep after moving into a pet-restricted apartment years ago.

I thought I'd try to bring a smile to your face with a pic of Rufus after he'd been "dressed up" by our granddaughter towards the end of her 4th year birthday party. I captioned this one, "Man, I got layoff the 'nip...".

So sorry for your loss image When I had to put my 21 year old cat to sleep, it was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I didn't think I'd ever be able to get another cat after that, but a new one found her way into my life a few years ago, and now it would be just as hard if I lost her. It's amazing the effect pets have on our lives!

    Thanks everyone.

She put up a hell of a fight.

After losing all her hearing a few months ago, she felt the safest place for herself was either at my feet, waiting for them to move so she could follow me, on my lap, or laying next to me. If I was home, she was always within 2 feet of me.

As I write this, my little buddy (mentioned earlier in this thread) is keeping an eye on me from a few feet away. When I'm on the computer, he's never far away, usually right next to me. They (who am I kidding? *I*...) gain such pleasure and comfort from being close to us. Turbo knew her time was limited so she was maximizing it by being near you. Putting down an animal is always hard but you made the right decision. You will never forget her and the memories will definitely be pleasant ones.

My condolences on your loss, my friend.

Turbo's buddy, Bumper joined her this morning in heaven. She had been ill this week, not eating and passed away on the way to the vet this morning.

Rough day today for sure but knowing she's with Turbo again brings much comfort.

Losing a pet is one of the hardest things in the world. I'm sorry to hear about this.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
