What is approx value for a 1908 NM St Gaudens $20 Unc???

She looks 62/63 but has some hairlines across the sun and rays, over perhaps 15% of the reverse that will keep her from grading. I'd post a pic but my cam on fritz. I missed the wipe the first few times I looked at her, then caught the light just right and lo! There they were!

Just curious as to what this is worth in current market.

Thanks!

Do you have any detailed pics? Your best bet is the BST if you're trying to sell it.

Thanks, all. I won the coin on the bay, by bidding carelessly. I must be more disciplined. I paid $1,335 or so with shipping. That I missed the cleaning is embarrassing.

The seller invited me to return it, "if I think its been cleaned" but warned that he has images of the coin. Well, maybe I had that coming as I did express disappointment that seller did not disclose the cleaning. I am loathe to return stuff...such a hassle. I figured I was probably a $100 or so deep into her. With about a $35 bite on shipping both ways, me thinks she stays with me and we will together hope gold moves up.

I will have to get that dang camera fixed soon!

Why are you buying raw US gold on eBay? Do like to gamble? Are you sure it's even real?

How would one know if it is real or fake?

You would have to have it authenticated by a knowledgeable collector or dealer or get it slabbed. If you could post a detailed pic here, we could give you an opinion as to its authenticity. Unfortunately, eBay is a popular venue for unloading fake coins.

Could a collector authenticate it by weight?

Most counterfeit US gold coins are made to the proper mint specs (weight, diameter, fineness) so weighing a gold coin won't authenticate it. However, if the weight is off, you can be sure it's fake.

  • Thanks, I bought a 1908 NM St Gaudens several months ago, yes it was cleaned and for some reason the "color" just doesn't look right. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Not slabbed, but from a dealer. I really don't want to certify it as I'm holding it as bullion and it's not in great condition to spend money to certify, but I do need to make sure it is not a fake.
