Scrap Gold: pics added

Hello Everyone...

I normally post on a different forum but I have a gold question. My mom just gave my wife some gold jewlery and there's one piece in particular that my wife probably won't wear. There's a significant amount of 14 K gold in this piece (2.5 oz maybe?), so my question is: what's the going rate that dealers will pay for scrap gold if gold is trading at $1130/oz?

Thanks for your assistance...

Leo

Here are some images I was able to take this AM... I also found out that the "doubloon" is a 14K gold replica and my step-dad used 2 oz of boulion (90%) for the jewler to make this piece. I've not had the chance to weigh it yet

  • Assuming its not plated then you have 14/24 of 2.5 ounces which is slightly less than 1.5 ounces. So figure about 1700 in gold. You can expect to get anywhere from 30%(cash for gold) to 90% (or more if they like the piece).

You really need to find the right buyer.

I'm sure you know 14K is 14/24 actual gold or about .5833 fine. 2.5 ozs is a bunch! That must be one large piece of jewelry. Since PM is measured in troy ounces, lets assume you have 78 grams of 14K gold.

0.5833 fine X 78 grams yields an actual gold weight of 45.5 grams of gold or 1.463 ozs. At $1130/oz you're looking at $1,653.

How much should you get out of it? If it was mine I wouldn't take less than $1,500. I realize that's 90% of it's gold value but unless you really need the cash you will have the chance to get $1,500 in the not to distant future.

Most offers right now would likely be $800 to $1,200 and there's no way I'd sell it that cheap.

Yes, it's a very large gold bracelet with a replica dubloon in it (my mother lived in Florida at the time when Mel Fisher was quite popular). It's so large that it's just not my wife's personal taste.

    Thanks for the help.

    Best Regards,

Are you sure that doubloon is a replica? Some of the coins from the Atocha were used in jewelry.

If your asking price is near melt, the BST may be the best venue since there are no eBay or paypal fees.

Thanks everyone... I'll be imaging some coins later today, so I'll get images of this piece up as well. At this point I don't know if my wife wants to sell it or not. That decision is up to her...

I'll ask my mom if the doubloon is real or replica...

Thanks for all of your input.

Don't be surprised if she doesn't know. The coins from the Atocha came with a certificate of authenticity. Ask her if this jewelry came with a COA. Even if she no longer has it, at least you would know to do further investigation of the coin.

The whole piece is done in 14K gold. The jewler did have some real pieces to make the replicas from, so they're pretty good fakes, but all one would have to do is weigh it to tell the difference between this and a real one.

    Thanks
