never heard of grading company. How can I protect myself

I am looking at an old card graded by some nobody grading company. It is quite expensive. Can you buy it and still have protection if PSA says it is fake or trimmed?

  • Usually not unless the seller will allow you to return the card. Generally speaking is a card is ina holder from an off the wall grader like GEM, CMA, etc it is for a reason whether it be trimmed or plain out overgraded.

  • I thought so. Unfortunately I have been trying to find this card for months, and this is the first one I have ever seen!

If it's not in a PSA or SGC holder then you may want to pass, especially on an expensive card.

The only way I see for you to protect yourself is to buy it with a CC through PayPal

and have it looked at by PSA, SGC or even BVG within 45 days.

If it comes back within that time frame you could still file a SNAD and possibly win.

Or you can be up front with the seller and tell him you plan on taking it to PSA etc

and if it comes back as trimmed could you get a refund. You would need the seller

to approve a longer return period. Under no circumstances should you take the card

out of the POS holder it is in.

    Does it look high grade?

First question I would ask seller

"Why was it graded by this company?" it may because it couldnt be graded by a real one (SGC, PSA)

And will the seller stand behind the card as being authentic and unaltered?

If he says no, then I would pass.

PS any hints of what card you are looking for? image

If it is an expensive high grade card any collector with half of a brain knows to send it into PSA, SCG or BVG. You can send it to PSA without cracking the holder but then PSA will be biased and it will come back 95% of the time EOT even if it is not trimmed. The seller WILL NOT give you your money back if you crack the case and it is EOT. I have seen this problem before and ebay will back the seller 100% of the time in this situation.

Don't buy it. That is the best protection you can have.

    Good for you.
  • Thanks for all the input. You get excited when you haven't seen a card graded or not for months. I needed you guys to support me on what I pretty much already knew. It is a hockey card from a seller in Canada. Which also means it will take time to get it, and the clock will be ticking!

Thanks for keeping me from making a bad purchase.

Does the seller have other cards for sale in PSA, Sgc holders? If so do several have consecutive serial numbers? A scan or auction link would be nice, unless you are afraid to draw attention to the auction. In reality others collecting this rare card are probably aware it is on the market.

Buyers can win a PayPal SNAD in those circumstances. May require
a PP-appeal or a claim to the San Jose BBB, but they are winnable.

Buyers can also win a credit-card chargeback in those circumstances.

  • What is the name of the company? Did I miss that? You said hockey card out of Canada, if it's KSA they do a lot of hockey cards. They are pretty reputable.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • It is on ebay. It is a 1923 Clancy. ACA is the grading company. I do not know how to make a link.

  • Card looks legit. Company is not. The grade does not fit. Hard to say with the pic but i would think PSA 2-3.

  • Think ACA is a fairly new grading company out of Canada. May be OK, but would hate to take a risk on a $$$ card like that.

    Possibly so.

PayPal SNAD-claims are largely decided based on the relative
presentation "skills" and militancy of the complainant/respondent.

Credit-card chargeback decisions - though more difficult to influence
by fraud - also hinge on the ability of the parties to "make their case."

  • Now you guys have me still thinking about it. He has other auctions of fairly pricey cards, but they are all PSA graded? Makes me think PSA would not grade it.

If the card is trimmed, would it be worth it to you at that price?
If not, pass on it. You don't want to buy headaches and SNAD claims.

For that money I would wait until it comes around again or even if it doesn't sell ask the seller to get it graded PSA and tell him you will pay the costs and buy the card if it comes back authentic.
