How can i find values?

I'm considering starting to collect PSA graded cards of particular players - how can I find out what the current going rate for a particular card in a particular grade is? I've notice that there is a wide swing of values on BINs on ebay for the same card in the same grade.

Thanks - getting back into the hobby after a 20 year layoff...

  • vintagecardprices.com my friend and hobby shop owner recommended it to me for grade cards and i've never looked back. costs $25/mo. tho
  • If it is a relatively common card, just check eBay closed auctions. By common I mean a lot of them were printed not common player. If it isn't a card that sells on a regular basis, as mentioned previously, VCP is your best bet for cards pre-1990 but it is a paid service.
  • SMR will give you a Beckett approach to the graded card game. I typically look to pay 20-25% less than the SMR price. If you join PSA you will get this publication in a print and available online each month.

VCP will give you more up to date pricing, but in all honesty pricing is down in this economy so sellers who do not need to make a quick profit are going to sell above VCP and hold their ground.

What I'm looking to do is put together a set of starts / semistars from the 50s and 60s (Roger Maris, Roberto Clemente, etc), one of each of thier cards in PSA 7 or so. Rather not pay to get the priceguide since that will take away from my available capital.

  • For those cards, you will need VCP to help you.

When I resumed collecting some years back I went on ebay and was a spectator only for several weeks to get a feel for pricing. As has been suggested VCP is a good tool. Beware of cards with qualifiers, some dealers do not discount these. Sometimes there will be a good deal with a BIN but they are sold quickly. Most BINs are vastly overpriced. Patience is a virtue, most cards will come up again. My "Buyers remorse" has almost always been a spur of the moment purchase.
