Coins with frogs or lizards on them

Does anyone know if there is a source to find out how many, if any, coins have been made with frogs or lizards on them? My wife is a big frog and lizard fanatic and I think it would tickle her to death if I could start her on a collection with these reptiles on them.

Thanks

This medal executed by Thomas Rawlins is to commemerate the fortitude
and consistance of the King. The Salamander was frequently adopted as
an emblem of fortitude and patience under suffering.

The best way I know to compile a thematic list of world coins is to flip page by page through Krause. image

If you're not familiar with it, Krause refers to the series of Standard Catalog of World Coins, Krause is the publisher. Each century to 1600 has its own book and they are big! You should be able to find one to browse at a local bookstore like Borders or the library. They can be purchased as a pdf on DVD now for around $30, so if you're gonna seriously dig into world coins they are invaluable.

    I always liked this one:

AKA the phone book image Good suggestion -- it's how I come up with lists for fun thematic collections (reptiles, bears, elephants, ships, etc.)

I have maybe a dozen reptile and amphibian coins -- I'll post a list of them this evening if you want. I think she'd love having some coins like that -- it's hard to resist those animal coins, I always come back from a show with a few in my pocket.

  • Try Eurocollections, I think Poland and a couple other countries have moderns with frogs or lizards on them.
    Good Luck!

  • You could go to Ebay "Coins and Paper Money" and type "lizard" and/or "frog" into the search engine; best way I know.

My brother in law wanted a coin with a skull on it for Christmas. Granted he's a sick person but he's a liberal college
professor as well, so it's not only normal but endemic to the species image

In any case, I found several for him, including a couple of medals and a hobo nickel.....
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.
It's just that I got my PCGS grades.
  • Here are the reptile (& one amphibian) coins I have -- no frogs, but lizards are denoted by ***

KM-89 Cayman Islands 1987 10 cents -- green sea turtle
    KM-29 Gambia 1987 1 dalasi -- slender-snouted crocodile
KM-46 Jamaica 1987 5 cents -- American crocodile (per Krause, so = alligator?)
    KM-3 Kiribati 1979 5 cents -- stump-tailed gecko***
    KM-474 Liberia 2000 5 cents -- dragon
    KM-60 New Zealand 1987 5 cents -- tuatara***
KM-188 North Korea 2002 1/2 chon -- Mamushi pit viper
KM-3a Papua New Guinea 2005 5 toea -- plateless turtle

I have posted this link before, and it's been a couple years since he has updated it, but it's one of the best places to look for any animal-related coins. He has already done all the leg-work. There are a number of subgroups throughout the site, but start with the "animal class" section and then to the snakes and reptiles that you want. I used to send Daniel coins from all the foreign stuff that I have and he was really into the multiyear project, but I haven't seen him at any T.O. area shows, nor any posts on other boards. But it's a great link to put into your favorites: http://www.coinzoo.net/
