Of the 45,000 residing in Haiti, the majority are within the city limits of Port-Au-Prince (5 miles or less from epicenter).

It is way too early to even guesstimate the total number of deaths.

it's the poorest country in the western hemisphere, weak infrastructure, ill prepared for any disaster. I pray for all the missing, wounded and killed.

My first reaction as well, but I guess the OP was making a point that this disaster is worse than 911 and Katrina combined, so I understand.
