FUN show report - Last but not Least!

Most of you would agree that the FUN show is only in Florida, well for me it started a few days prior when I made a short journey to the Lemont Coin Show outside of Chicago. I went because another board member (aficionado) invited me, and I had never been there before. I wasn't looking to buy anything unless it REALLY caught my eye, because I wanted to have a good lot of cash on hand for FUN. We arrived around 9-ish and immediately showered the 40-table show. To speed up 2 hours at the show, I was impressed with the amount of Bust Silver material dealers had. I ended up leaving with an 1829 Bust Dime (JR-7) Small 10c, and a 1820 Bust Quarter (JR-3) Medium O. Both coins didn't set me back too much, and I sold a little silver to subsidize the cost!

I waited patiently for three more days before I could leave for the actual FUN show on Wednesday.................

Ok, Wednesday arrived (what a relief, I could barely sit still in anticipation for the coin show and nice warm weather). Oh wait, Florida just happened to FREEZE over that week!!! BUT, there was good new, the coin show was still on image I got in around 12:45 and by 2 I was done checking into my hotel and at auction lot viewing. Before I could take two steps into the Lot Viewing area MFH and Dimeman stopped me and we chatted for at least a good half-hour. Therefore I sat down, chatted, looked at some coins, and just relaxed. Most of the coins at auction this year were not up to par with previous years, although there were some fantastic coins in the sale (we'll get to that for Thursday)

I stayed at lot viewing for some 3 hours, before leaving around 5 to grab some dinner at IHOP. Dimeman, MFH, myself, and another board member (I apologize that I cannot remember your username) who collects Barbers joined us. Just a great group of people to talk coins and share stories with. I spent the rest of the evening chatting coins until about 10 while MFH was filling out submission forms. I wanted to get to sleep reasonably early so that I would be totally fresh for the long show on Thursday.

Sleeeeeppppp.......

Good morning Tursday! Woke up around 7 and jumped into the shower (I'll spare the graphic images). Low and behold there was no hot water, in fact it was really cold (much like the Florida weather at the time!). Needless to say I was not pleased, not in the least. Still, I did not let it deter me, and I left my hotel at 8 to trek to Denny's for the annual FUN breakfast. There was a table in the back full of familiar and new Board Members. To name a few: Dennis88, PonyExpress, MFH, CoinKid and many others; about 10-12 in all. What a lively conversation for such early in the morning, I'm sure several cups of coffee were drunk before my arrival! CoinKid and I ordered Pancake Poppers which were large balls of pancake dough with cinnamon and sugar on them....wow, delicious. Coins were also flying all around the table, and before I knew it I was bonbarded with a wide array of gorgeous coins....mostly slabbed by our own PCGS!

We huddled over to the show and arrived at around 9:30. We registered and waited for the eventualy opening at 10:10, due to political speeches and the what not. Once they let us in it was a mad-house of mostly elderly men, although some younger such as myslef image racing downstairs to enter the venue. Nerdfest at its finest image I started left, at aisles 100, and made an effort to look for only Bust Dimes and Quarters which were new additions to my collection, of reasonable cost, and a grade/color that suited me. Needless to say I didn't find anything for a couple hours until I made it over to aisle 1100 or 1200 to JJ Teaparty. I immediately spotted a 1836 Dime PCGS-35 which was absolutely perfect for my set. I did a quick, literally 2 second, once-over of each side and asked the price. I was shocked when the price quoted me was reasonable, and before I knew it the sale was done; I never looked closely at the coin until later that evening.

I purposely decided to skip some of the more speciality dealers of Bust coinage (i.e. Rich Uhrich) for Friday because I knew he would have a decent selection for me that day. It was only 1 or 2 before I finished up scowering all 13 aisles for coins. I passed up on a lot of coins, but that was mostly a price issue rather than a quality issue. If I had an open checkbook my collection would be finished, but I'm not that well off! I talked with Dennis88 and PonyExpress (Glenn Holsonbake) for a while which ate up enough time before the auctions. At 6 PM Dennis and I made out way to the Currency Auction (Dennis can fill you in on the details later). We stayed until a little before 7 so that we could hit the Platinum Auction and see SaintGuru's gorgeous Saints go off; I looked at his Saints at Lot viewing and I will honest that he truly had some spectacular coins, especially when compared with similar dates and grades.

To summarize the auction: Bland, interesting, exciting, bland, interesting, exciting, etc. Boring re-treads were auctioned, unusual coins that I don't normally see were sold, and then there were the 6 or 7-figure items which were the most fun to watch. A group of us stayed until about 11 or so, and hit up Denny's for a late-night snack. My snack ended up being a fantastic plate of nachos. Afterwards MFH dropped me off at my hotel and I fell asleep immediately.

Friday:
I was supposed to meet Barndog and a few other JRCS members for breakfast at 8, but I didn't wake up until around 9 when my phone went off with a message wondering what I was doing! Well I was sleeping! But I was fine to wake up when I did. I again jumped into a cold shower, which really woke me up, and quickly received a ride to the show; all breakfast was skipped.

At the show I decided to jump deeper into dealers' holdings to look for 'any' Bust Dime that might interest me, included were junkier coins! rld### (Koolaid guy) and I meandered through aisles looking for Barber Halves and Bust Dimes, respectively. Needless to say little could be found. Although I did stumble upon a decent filler of an 1829 Large 10c Dime at a reasonable price and great condition.

I was still really bummed that I couldn't find any new Bust Dimes with Cuds on Thursday, so I became a little desperate and looked at most of the "junky-er" Bust Dimes which dealers brought. I soon found this tactic to pay off. I flipped through a quarter-box of 2x2 Bust Dimes, and stumbled across this little gal:

Although this 1833 JR-4 is now a triplicate, I believe that this one is a slightly later die state than my other two.

Just a neat Bust Dime which fairly commonly exhibits this Cud.

Less than an hour later, CoinKid and I bumped into each other and we started hitting other booths to look at Morgans and Bust Dimes, respectively. Coinkid and I didn't have much luck, but I was able to find one ugly Bust Dime with a new Cud that I needed. The dealer listed the date as 1836, but the obverse at the date section was indiscernable, but seeing the CUD on the reverse I quickly deduced that it was from 1833. The obverse is too ugly for me to want to show it!

1833 JR-1, reverse CUD over "D to E2", mentioned in the Bust Dime Book as only being a Retained Cud, although another recent specimen, aside from the one below, has come to light to challenge such a claim, and my example (although well worn) may testify to being a full Cud.

Friday was my last day at the show because I needed to catch a 7 PM flight to Miami to see some family. BUT, Glenn Holsonbake generously allowed me to check my ebay bids/wins, and I found out that I was the proud winner of a three cent silver with a Cud. This is my third, different, trime with a Cud, and from what I can find there are only 5-known, different, Cud's on Trimes. My goal is to acquire all five!

Thus, that is essentially my show in a nutshell. I know I'm missing several stories, meeting other members, and other details, but you have a jist of the action.

All-in-all I would call the show a moderate-success image

The grade of AU-50 is statistically superior to any other grade in terms of point-increase:# of grade increases (ratio)

AU-50 is the 16th different coin-grade, when starting at PO-01, and correlates to an average increase of 3.125-points per grade advancement.
In terms of other random 'grade' examples (which could conceivably challenge my above conclusion), MS-70 is the 30th different grade, and thus correlates to an average grade-increase of just 2.33 points per grade. MS-60 translates to the 20h grade, and only an average 3 point increase per grade. VF-20 is the 10th different grade, and only correlates to the a 2-point increase. Etc.
