OT: It's now been 21 years

Wow, I can't believe its now been 21 years since I lost my father. He passed away on Jan 13, 1989 (Friday the 13th) .The last thing I remember is my father leaving for work while I was getting ready to go to trade school...Just a quick goodbye to my father and that was it......and just like that, I've lived over half of my life without him.

I certainly miss him all the time, but I have some good memories and I'm very proud of what he did for us. I'm also very proud of what he accomplished in his short life. He was a department head of Transportation for CBS Studios (at the time CBS / MTM Studios). He also was a partner with a few guys, which included Michael Landon. I still have my old little league photos that showed I was sponsored by Little House on the Prairie and the company they owned together. From what I recall, they owned the first fleet of trucks that were rented out to the various studios. At that time all of the studios owned their own trucks and today, the majority of studio trucks and trailers are independently owned. So in a way, they changed that part of the business forever.

My father used to take me and my older brother to the store and he loved buying us wax and rack pack baseball & football cards. Today, I still have the majority of my cards even though they aren't in the greatest condition. The cards and few movie star autographs are actually all I have left from my father. That's part of the reason why I started collecting cards again and why I've been doing my Dodgers Rookie cards collection. They are for my son and he will always remember they are from his dad.

Remember that your parents and families are a blessing and to enjoy every day to its fullest.

    Brian,

Thanks for sharing. This is what makes collecting special. I still have my Dad and he is a big reason why I am in the hobby, though he probably doesn't realize it.

It sounds like your Dad was a good man Brian. Keep on thinking those great thoughts of him.
  • My Dad never collected but got me started with packs of 1979 Topps. Great story of your dad. Wish mine would have collected. It appears we missed out on some memories.

Great story, and I'm glad you have the memories.

My dad was never into cards, but faithfully drove me all over Texas to card shows before I could drive myself.

After every show, I always took great pride in buying dinner for both of us. Even if it wiped out most of my profit for the day, I still wanted to do that to try and impress him.

Brian, Thanks for sharing the story of your dad! I am really fortunate to have my dad still around to talk to and share stories with. Your dad sounds like a great Dad, and I am sure you miss him daily.

Great story Brian. I just passed the 5th anniversary of my Dad's passing. He died shortly after the Sox finally won a World Series. I'll never forget the phone calls we made to each other during the series and especially the one after the win.

    Thanks for sharing

    Thanks for sharing Brian.

I lost my dad in 1982 when I was 14. I still think about him many days of the week.

Also, a good reminder to all of us parents to do everything we can to leave positive memories for our kids!

sounds like a great guy! Glad he got you into collecting as well. I never realized it, but my dad was a coin collector and probably helped in my collecting of cards. He recently said, "in case I drop dead, these are probably worth something" and he handed me a box with a ton of 19-early 20th century coins and a few comics from his childhood.

    +1 for dads!

    Very heartfelt post.
My dad just up and left my family in 1966 when I was 7.
    Never had the memories.
My mom got me started in collecting by buying me a pack everytime we went grocery shopping.
    She is definately a blessing.
My dad leaving did make me a better dad to my kids. I realize how much time and love can
shape and influence a life. Enjoy every second you have with the ones you love !!

Cool story, thanks for posting it. My dad collected coins which is part of the reason I started collecting cards. He also loved vintage cars, and is 100% of the reason why I own 4 of them, which is about 2 or 3 too many. image

    Great story!
Im very lucky to work 20 ft away in the same office from my dad 5 days a week. I never take it for granted.
  • Wow, very touching. I welled up a bit I must admit. Makes me want to hug my family, but they are 6 hours away. *sigh*

I think I will give them a call.

  • Thanks for sharing.

I have mixed feelings towards my dad, we are polar opposites and when I was 15, I sold all my baseballs cards, took the money and left home. By the time I returned home I was an adult and my dad was working overseas. We didnt talk or the like for like 10 years or more.

Things are better now. More we accept each other I guess. Not sure. Thanksgiving, X-Mas and the like are held at my house, we exchange gifts, and sometimes do things together. We don't do birthdays or the like, but my family never did. I never had a birthday party. We are currently collecting surplus lumber to build a shed or something together. But I don't imagine we will ever have the bond you and your dad did.

Brian, that was a very nice tribute to your dad. My dad died 15 years ago (when I was 24) and he as well got my brother and I collecting cards. He was just as hardcore as we were. The crazy thing is to this day, I will pull a cool Reds card or buy a nice vintage Mantle and sometimes my first impulse is to grab the phone and call him to tell him what I got. Then after a couple of seconds I realize I can't. That sucks.

  • This July will make 30 yrs. since I lost my dad... I was 7, he was 49. The older I get, the more I miss not having a father for most of my life, especially since I now have 2 boys of my own. I have very few memories of my dad. He was in and out of the hospital from when I turned 5 until he passed away 2 yrs. later. Love you DAD!

Good tribute. I'm not quite at that stage yet. My dad passed passed away last Wednesday (6 Jan) so we're all still in the process of getting over the fact that he's not there any more.

Thank you everyone who replied or sent me PM's. I can assure you I appreciate the kind words.

My grandmother (my father's mother) is now 90 and still alive and living in a retirement community in Arlington Heights, ILL. I haven't seen her in over 25 years. I'm hoping to fly out this year to see her and my aunt to say hello, but I also want to learn more about my father. I was so young and really didn't know a lot about my father. I guess that's another reason why I want to make sure I leave things for my kids that tell them about their father.

    Sincerely,
    Brian
