A freind of mine found some old Saint Louis Cardinals from 1940's in a team set box

He has the entire set of players. They were too chick !@#$% to touch the cards to take pictures after a dog ear broke off of the box.
I did find the set on the PSA registry

This was one of three sets issued at about the same time- the others being the Browns team issue, and the Reds W711-2 Harry Hartman set.
One of my favorite regional set groupings. If there are in really good shape (8's and better) they are definitely worth grading. Lots of HOFers in the Cards set (and one of only 2 Branch Rickey cards issued during his career as an executive)

How did these guys fit into the box? Or were they dead and these were just their bones?

  • Those are really neat. I only live a couple hours from St. Louis and every time I hit a garage sale or estate auction I expect to find a cool Cardinals item like that, but I have never found any cardinals items. Congrats to your friend.

My friends father in law had a bunch of Cardinal stuff from his Dad in an old desk drawer. This was THE big item.

The foxing on the box may bode ill for the cards.

They need to come out of there and be slabbed.

Agreed, the owner signed up on the site but still needs to be approved by PSA. He said he will join the discussion once he can post.

Ive had many over the years. The Slaughter and Rickey are the key.

PS. Southworth is a HOFer too, so should have way more than 2.00 points.

Frank- they weighted it before Southworth got elected, and haven't changed it.

  • Here's the story on how I came across these, now that I can post..

We headed to the In-laws for Christmas and met the brother-in-law's family there too. While the kids were milling around looking for something to do, they decide to take a look at the old record player. This thing hadn't been used in 40+ years.. While they were digging around they found grandpa's "Knot Hole club" cards for the Browns and Cardinals as well as this pack of cards. I knew they would probably be quite collectible, as grandpa picked these up before he went in the Navy for WWII. A quick note to Troy confirmed this. Grandpa opened the pack and showed the kids the cards, he still knew all the players.. I didn't have a scanner there or I would have scanned them while I had a chance. They were quickly put away after we found the price on ebay for a few of these cards!

I know this is a collectors forum, but please don't bother making offers. These are going to the grandkids at some point. I'll try to talk him into getting them sealed and graded, but even that might prove difficult (he really likes having things around from his childhood to show the kids).

Is there any value in the knot hole club cards? I didn't find any info on these.

If you have them graded and slabbed, that would not only make them more valuable, but it would make them easier to look at the cards. As they are, every time you remove them from the box, it causes more damage to the card stock. Either way, those are really cool, and I'm glad to see you're planning on keeping them in the family!
