Dallas at Minn..............

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do my Cowboys have a chance or is there playing great of late have more to do with who they played rather than how good they really are.

To me the defence looks good and Romo is playing like a really good QB.

I'm prejudice......what say ye!

I think it comes down to 4 keys:

    1) How well the Minn OL can contain the Dallas DL? Dallas is currently sporting THREE ProBowl caliber players in the front seven.
    2) Can Peterson return to form and begin to run more effectively? I'm not sure his foot is near 100%.
    3) Which secondary holds up better? Dallas faces a STOUT core of big receivers, and Minn is still banged up. Winfield looked AWFUL last time I saw him.
    4) Can Dallas run the ball effectively on that Minn front? The Vikings are pretty stout, and both Barber & Choice have nicks.

    ok, FIVE keys:
    5) Can Dallas stay under 5 false starts in that noisy dome?

Those 5 keys all make sence, but I think the main key is putting presure on Favre. If he has time he will pick you apart.

    I'm glad it's indoors....should be a good game.

They should be able to compete with Minnesota even if the latter is true. Remember, the Vikings played horribly down the strectch but were given a season-ending reprieve by a Giants team that had already closed up shop.

Being ever the pessimist, however, I must say that Dallas is gonna get killed.

The way Dallas is playing right now, and the way Minnesota played to end the regular season (I don't put much stock into the game against a Giants team that was already booking tee times), the better question is what does Minnesota have to do to beat Dallas?....Minnesota's pass defense can be beat, and the Cowboys have plenty of weapons to exploit it....Dallas's defense is playing out of its mind, they will get pressure on Favre and force some turnovers...unless Romo reverts back to old big-game form, Dallas will win.

It will all come down to turnovers as usual. Hopefully Romo panics before Favre.

    Some good input here...

bking made some good points. I don't think the problem is with Peterson's foot, but rather with the Vikings' OL. For most of the season they had great pass protection, but could never open a hole for the running game. I've never been a Bryant McKinnie fan, but he played most of the season pretty well. He looked like a fool against Carolina and Julius Peppers. He needs to play a decent game for the Vikings to win.

If Antoine Winfield is still hurting, he cannot be the deep man- or do what they did last game and throw him in for limited play.

The last game and a half, we saw Favre's Vikings playing, and they should show up against the Cowboy's. It was Childress's Vikings that had their butt's handed to them against the Panthers and part of the Bears game. Let Favre throw. Make short passes to Peterson and Harvin and let them run after the catch.

The Metrodome can be deafeningly loud, but it doesn't seem to bother disciplined teams- it probably won't be too much of a factor on Sunday. Hopefully it is a good game...

  • Dallas handled the noise in New Orleans and it dosen't get much louder than there . Scoring early would help quiet it down a bit

It's tough to run inside against Minn defense and with Barber still not 100% it's going to be ever tougher. They need to utilize Jones speed and get him on the outside where it's easier to run on thier D.

Hopefully the week off helps to 1) get players well rested 2) get them as close to 100% as possible and 3) plan and practice for the game.

It'll probably come down to special teams. I'll take Longwell kicking and Percy Harvin returning kicks any day of the week - especially at home.

I honestly think the Cowboys are the favorite to win this game. Minnesota has some issues.
  • Yeah, I mean their QB only tossed 33 tds and tossed 7 ints, 4000 yards.
Averaged about 30 points per game.
    Gave up under 20.
Rb ran for 1400 yards and had 18 tds.
    Lost 4 times all season.
    Issues...

Dabeef, have to agree with you here. Those are some nice issues you listed.

I think your main problem is the same as us..................................a numbnuts for a coach!
  • Dimeman I just hope for a clean well played game. Let them play, no dumb penalties, etc. Let Favre play HIS game, Players play, coaches , well , stay out of the way !

I still remember Tony Dorsett going for 99, maybe Adrian can erase that memory?

This is going to be a heckuva game. I am a non-Cowboys fan who lives in Texas, so I think I have some objectivity about them.

I saw several of Minnesota's games this year and almost all the Cowboys games. I think this game will be close and may be decided by a key turnover late.

    The keys:

    1) Minnesota must stop the pass rush, or contain it. If they do not, Favre will make mistakes. This will be the best pass rush they have faced all year.
    2) Minnesota MUST MUST MUST commit to running the football, even if it does not work early. If they try to roll out the Andy Reid sling it approach, the game is over. Dallas is excellent at stopping the pass if you decide to be one dimensional. Minnesota must work from the inside out and make Dallas respect the run. That will open up the passing game They have AP, THEY MUST USE HIM.
    3) Dallas must do what they have been doing offensively, namely run the delayed handoffs to Jones and use that to open up the passing lanes to Austin and Witten. What does Minnesota do to counter this? They need to put their # 1 CB, Winfield, on Roy Williams and completely take him out of the game while doubling Miles Austin with their # 2 corner and a safety. Why put the # 2 corner on the better receiver? Because if the double team help works, you've completely shut down both receivers. Then the only weapon left is Witten, and he's a big one.
    4) Dallas must avoid playing dumb, making stupid mistakes like penalties, and making special teams mistakes. They are on a roll, but I still think they are mentally fragile. If they make a couple mistakes things could start to roll downhill in the Dome.

This is the "Show Me" game for the Cowboys. Win and I think they can legitimately win it all. Lose, and what I've suspected about them for a few weeks will become evident, that they've looked better than they really are because they beat a Saints team that had little to play for (AND MADE NO EFFORT TO RUN THE FREAKING FOOTBALL), and a Philly team that was a lot worse than the record they had.

  • It doesnt matter? All they tried to DO was run the ball in the first half. They had maybe 100 total yards if that. 2nd half, favre threw the ball like 30 times for 300 plus yards. It doesnt matter? LOL

I have to disagree with Ronburgandy on one thing. The Saints win was definetly a legit win. The Saints hadn't lost and still wanted that perfect season.

    Now.

I was just watching Sports center. And they were interviewing Favre and making a big deal out of the fact that Favre was 0 and 3 against Dallas in the playoffs.

This is like comparing apples and oranges. THIS Cowboy team is NOT the Cowboy team that beat the Pack 3 out 3 during the 90's. That was an eliet Dallas football team. Romo is no Aikman, there is no Emmit Smith or Mickel(SP) Ervin and the list goes on and on.

This Cowboys are starting to look good maybe real good, but there is still a lot to prove. I think the Vikes will give the boys all they want. They are hungry (o for 4 in SB's) and Favre is having his best year ever at 40. We have to put presure on him and make him make hurried bad plays. Tough assignment.

    Should be a good game.
  • RonBurgundyRonBurgundy Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭
The Dallas defense is different than the Bears defense. They will chew Favre up and spit him out with that pass rush - which the Bears do not have - if all they do is try to throw the ball. They must run to keep the Cowboys' aggressiveness in check. If not, Favre may not finish the game.

Again, I'm not a Cowboys fan. In fact, I hope they lose on Sunday.

Yes, Peterson ran for 1400; but they were very inconsistant running the ball. I think AP's yard per carry average dropped about a full yard from game 8 on. The offensive line is not making big holes for Peterson. We'll see. Dallas seems to have no weaknesses right now.

Yep, he averaged 4.8 in the first half of the season and 4.0 in the second. At the risk of cherry-picking, if you remove the DET rout in week 10 from his 2nd half totals, he only averaged 3.5 a carry in the 2nd half. I think it's a combination of the OL being shaky, him being dinged up, and Childress bowing to Brett's desires.

Any way you look at it - they were 7-1 in the 1st half, 5-3 in the second; 2-3 in their last 5, with one of those wins coming while the NYG were busy discussing tee times with each other. The Vikings have made the mistake of relying too much lately on their aging QB, who can still look good most of the time but will still break your heart in the end.

I sincerly hope your wishes for bad luck don't come true, but I'm pretty sure you won't see the last one happen. This team seems to have changed A LOT since T.O. left (as you should be quite familar with) and I think finger-pointing and name-calling isn't very likely. This group seems to have really grown tight after T.O., Tank Johnson, and Greg Ellis were shown the door.

That is one thing I was worried about- then I heard on the KQ Morning Show that the officiating crew was the most flag-happy crew in the NFL, especially on the home team. They called the Lions game after the break, and that was flags galore.

I think the x-factors will be officiating, special teams, and whether or not Romo chokes.

Refresh my memory, what happened to the Vikes in 98?
  • VikingDudeVikingDude Posts: 1,346 ✭✭✭
NFC Championship game, lost in OT to the Atlanta Falcons. Gary Anderson was perfect all season but missed a 38 yarder toward the end of regulation that would have sealed the game but missed. Then Atlanta scores and then we get the ball back in regulation and the brilliant Dennis Green, with one of the most explosive offenses in NFL history, decides to kneel on the ball.

Okay, now that those painful memories have beeen drudged up I'm pretty sure we're going to lose tomorrow. And then football fans everywhere will have to endure more of "America's Team". By the way whoever made up that "America's Team" garbage should come to Minnesota on a cold, crisp winter evening, cut a whole in the ice on any one of the 10,000 lakes and jump in.
  • DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
The media did the "Americas Team" thing with the Cowboys way back and then later to the Atlanta Braves in baseball. I don't know why.

I sure hope the boys beat the Vikes tomorrow. We have owned them in the playoffs in the past, BUT that is just that "the past".

We have to stop a very good offense and keep up our offense. I predict the team that scores the most points will win!
