Can the SEC 5-peat?

I can speak for Alabama. We will have a chance, but it will only be that.

We have some unfair scheduling going on right now. Six teams have scheduled a bye week next season before playing Bama next year.

We added Penn State and FSU as nonconference games.

It will be a very tough road for Bama to travel to even get a chance at defending our title. If we stumble I hope that one of the other SEC teams step up. I like keeping the title down here for a long long long time!!!

On the plus side, even with losing Ro. Mcclain, we have some serious depth coming back. Not a lot of seniors this year.

  • I'll say that Alabama, Ohio State, and Nebraska have the best chance of winning the national championship next year.
Perhaps LSU if they get lucky.

I do not see anyone going undefeated next year. Perhaps those three teams have the best chance too.
  • The SEC's problem is the SEC. By having so many strong teams in one conference playing one another, they kinda canibalize themselves. That's how you can get weaker teams from other conferences in better bowl games than some SEC teams. To win the national title by going thru the SEC is very hard, which just makes you appreciate how great the Florida/LSU/Florida/Bama teams of the last 4 years have been.

  • << <i> That's how you can get weaker teams from other conferences in better bowl games than some SEC teams. >>

Are you really trying to say the SEC gets screwed over with bowl tie-ins? They went 5-4 in bowls this year....that shows their bowl pairings were all pretty fair.

  • << <i>Perhaps LSU if they get lucky. >>

That luck would begin with Les Miles somehow getting the USC job.

Ha! I was trying to be nice & not call out he coaching but since you did lol...I was at a bar w/ my brother and during the last few seconds of that Ol Miss game EVERYONE was screaming. Can't believe Les tried to pretend he didn't order the QB to clock it.

Yeah Goot that's true, the SEC as a whole didn't show up in the bowl games. I really don't have any excuses/explainations, but I do think that if you were to take the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC (whoever that might be) and match them up against the 3rd or 4th team from any other conference there really wouldn't be a contest. Only 2 teams in the entire SEC didn't go to a bowl game this year.
  • Yeah, let Bama play the top team from a conference.
Let Florida have that conferences second best.
Let LSU have their third best, and so on and so on, and the SEC beats every conference by a 6-4 or greater margin.

The best judge of if the bowl games are fair is what the Vegas oddsmakers set the odds at. I believe the SEC was favored in 7 games but only won 5. Hmmmmm.....

I love Alabama fan talking about 5 peat when they were only 1/4th of it! Fresh off that butt kicking by Utah last year, this is the same team
that got blew up by FSU not too long ago. I think Alabama wil be just where LSU is this year. Enjoy it while it lasts!
  • Boise State should have been the national champions. They wouldve beaten Alabama.

At least a share of it. We need a playoff.

  • << <i> this is the same team

Kevin, get real. Last years Bama team got beat by a junior Tim Tebow and Florida. This years Bama
team destroyed a senior Tebow and Florida. Two totally different teams.

And who's going to stop Ingram and Richardson next year ? What defense besides Nebraska can handle them,
if Nebraska can do it at all. Ingram and Richardson are going to cause all kinds of holes in defensive secondaries
next year. Tide can roll again if they are motivated.

Tell me you're joking, right ???

Were the Colts favored over the Jets in Super Bowl III ???

Then tell Boise State to do what Bobby Bowden did when Florida State wanted to be noticed. Bowden took
his kids to Lincoln, Nebraska and anywhere else to play on other powerhouses home turf. That's how the Seminoles
gained respect. Boise State ain't getting no respect until they travel to the top dog in the SEC or Big XII to play
on their turf. That's what Bowden did.

We need a playoff ??? Why, so Cincinnati can get killed by Florida again ? Most people understood that Texas,
Bama, and Florida were the best three in the land this year. End of story.

Welcome to the boards. BTW I like your name. But...this is stupid talk. Boise State wants to be national champs? Then they better play somebody aside from Oregon. I seem to recall them venturing to the SEC a few years back and getting stomped by Georgia. They're fun to watch, but national champions? NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?!?!? (in "playoffs?" voice). Nah, they just can't hang. That's the truth.

    I 2nd what Edmund said.

They went 9-4 the year they got killed by Georgia... not a year anyone campaigned for their shot at the title.

Edit: I'm not for Boise claiming a shot at the title this year, but don't pick 1 game from their worst season in a decade as your reasoning.

I'm not. My reasoning is thier strength of schedule (or lack thereof).

I'm a Gator fan. Even if I wasn't, I could respect this schedule:

    The 2010 Gator Football Schedule

    9/4 Miami-Ohio
    9/11 South Florida
    9/18 at Tennessee
    9/25 Kentucky
    10/2 at Alabama
    10/9 LSU
    10/16 Mississippi State (Homecoming)
    10/30 Georgia (Jax)
    11/6 at Vanderbilt
    11/13 South Carolina
11/20 Appalachian State (Div. 1 AA) (Senior Day)
    11/27 at Florida State
12/4 SEC Championship Game (Atlanta GA)

Nothing at all against Boise, I am actually one of the few people that think the smurf field is cool. I understand they're adding Virgina Tech to the schedule next year. That's a start in the right direction, but they're no there yet. If you want a detailed breakdown of Boise's 2010 schedule read this.
  • BTW I do believe in a playoff system, it'd be cool for some of these underdogs to have a shot. Hey, upsets happen right?

Wow, south florida and miami ohio. Thats really a tough non-conference schedule. Boise state is the real 2009 national champions. They beat the pac-10 champions and have gone undefeated 2 out of the last 3 years.

Maybe in your mind, but I can promise you that the record books will have a different answer.
That answer that the record books will say is that Alabama was the champions in 2009!

The record books also say that Barry Bonds holds the home run records. But we all know that is bogus.

Until there is a playoff, there is no true champion in college football.

I agree with you on playoffs.

I strongly disagree with your assertion that Alabama's national championship this year is bogus. Alabama came as close as you can to a playoff this year. We beat the top two teams in a row at the end of the season.

  • Boise state also beat another undefeated team in their bowl game. Season ends with 2 undefeated teams, therefore no true champion.

When does undefeated equal national champions?

Never. College football is littered with undefeated non-championship teams. Don't act like this is the first time it has ever happened. Do a little research on the two major teams in just Alabama. Google Alabama 1966 and Auburn 2004 & 1993.

I wish there was a playoff, but there is not. Maybe soon there will be and conversations like this would be mute.

To make such assertions that Alabama NC this year is bogus, does not hold water.

Tell that to the Boise state players.

They deserve a share of the national championship as well as alabama.

In college football as you know, the champion is often times(2009) NOT determined on the field.
