Needing help locating cards distributed in Charlotte in 1980

I posted this over on the FCB and want to have a thread here as well dedicated to the search. I hit on this in another thread but wanted to make sure word was out. Today I spent time looking up and contacting various card shops in the Charlotte area hoping to stumble on the cards.

In the summer of 1980 the Charlotte Police Department sponsored a baseball card set featuring the Charlotte O's. The cards had baseball and crime prevention tips on the backs of the cards with contact information for the Police Department. The following images are the two cards that I am in need of to complete what I believe to be a full set set. Any help in locating and acquiring these cards would be greatly appreciated.

  • I realize its 30 years later, but maybe check with the Charlotte Police Department. maybe somebody there was working there at the time, and can point you in the right direction. It's worth a shot.

You could try and contact Mr. Huppert or one of the Pepper Girls.

A rep with the Charlotte PD is currently trying to help me locate anyone connected with the production and/or distribution of the set. Of course since it's been 30 years pretty much everyone connected would be retired right now. I spoke with several dealers around Charlotte today. Most of them said it had been years since they had even seen an orange Ripken, much less one of the singles.

Someone on FCB mentioned the same idea. I am certainly not against the idea. However, there are players in the set that never knew the card existed until a few years ago. With that being said I am going to assume that it wasn't mentioned to the players that the set was produced. When I interviewed Cat Whitfield I was thrilled to be able to offer him one of his orange cards. In the process of picking up some singles I had two copies of his card. When I initially spoke to another guy in the set about the cards he asked if I had an extra copy of his card. Since I did I offered it to him as well.

The problem with these cards were that the players were not given any of these cards (as opposed to the WBTV Blue cards which they all got).....These cards were given out as singles by the Charlotte PD to kids that summer...

Chris knows all this, I just threw this out for anyone else who may have interest

Yep, this has potential to be tough. Going a step further you have to take into consideration that the cards I got were part of lots and one card was given by a fan of the site. I am sure these cards are in some boxes but if/when someone stumbles on them they will assume common unless someone tells them what they have. Even then someone might not think it's worth the time to list. Going a step further the cards have no date on them. One area I messed up in is not writing on my site that I needed these cards. I may have already finished the set had I wrote somewhere on the site that I am looking for them!
  • Not to be OT but the Pepper Girls were a draw unto themselves. We used to always sit in the box seats so the Pepper Girls would wait on you. Go get your beer. Loved them back in the 70's. Not the same girls pictured when I went to old Crockett Park in Charlotte.

Better than a situation at a AA game I went to this past season. A local beer distribution had the truck with taps on the side pull up on the concourse and sell. For whatever reason the people running the operation thought it would be a good idea to let a little girl around the age of 9-10 operate the tap and serve the customers. Needless to say it created quite the stir and the home team was not very appreciative.
  • Had an e-mail in my box from a dealer who decided to comb through some old boxes of cards. He said he believes he found one of the two remaining cards I need for the Police set! He's sending a scan tonight to confirm it is what I am looking for!
  • I received an e-mail asking for my address with a notation sayng they had something they wanted me to have. Couldn't believe the generosity:

Thanks! I spent a few hours calling dealers in the Carolinas today hoping for a lead. Nothing.

Still looking for the card of the Pepper Girls to complete the set. A generous finder's fee (as well as my appreciation) to anyone who can find this card!

I realize that this is totally useless information, but Dave Huppert's birthday is this Sunday (in case you want to send him a card)
