totally unexpected by the "in the know" writers (who figured it was Toronto or the LA Angels).

Reported on MLB.com as five years, $25 million http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100110&content_id=7896508&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

He really loves pitching wearing a red hat with a white "C" on it.

yeah it's not a very Reds type of signing...high risk, high reward. His mechanics need to be rebuilt big time, but so did Randy Johnson's. Unfortunately he'll probably be rushed too soon in order to justify the contract but it could be a high ceiling reward. Could be a poor man's Big Unit, or he could be Jose Contreras Yankee days headcase. The Reds need to look towards 2011 when they'll get Volquez back and free up a ton of money when Harang, Arroyo, Tavares etc are bye bye...so they shouldn't let Chapman sniff the bigs until 2011...he's only going to get $1M for 2010 anyway.
  • This was about as expected as a signing with the Pirates or Royals. No one saw this one coming.

Same here, but in my case I was glad it wasn't the Red Sox. Besides, we all know that if he is any good he'll be out of Cincy in 6 years and signing with a team that will pay him more.

A couple of the Sportscasters here were saying that he may be a reliever and not put in the rotation. What do you guys think, or is it to soon to tell?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Unless they want to blow his arm out early it would probably be best to throw him in the pen for a couple seasons to get him used to the long season. 2500 +/- pitches @ 100+ mph is a lot to ask of a kid.

When a prospect signs with a smaller market team they are only auditioning for the big market teams who will get him if he pans out.

You know, not much has changed since the days when the Kansas City A's were basically a Yankees farm team.

  • If he sees the Reds mound before July, I'll be surprised. Like any other pitcher, he'll spend some time on the farm and when he comes up, he'll get close but not exceed 75 innings at the MLB level.

Dusty Baker is still managing the Reds, right? This poor Chapman kid is going to have a two, maybe three season career before Baker ruins him too.
