"Phantom" Registry Sets And The Reputation Of The Registry

PCGS has established a reputation over the years as the "cream of the crop". Their registry set program is #1 in the world. If you browse through all of the registry sets you will see high end specimens that deserve respect and admiration.

And then you get to the "Phantom" Sets. Doesn't it smudge PCGS's reputation and integrity by having a registry set that is compromised of coins that have not been graded by PCGS using their strict grading standard to ensure a noteworthy coin but some other one (NGC, ANACS)?

As if that blow wasn't big enough, then you get to some coins that were not graded at all by any professional grading company. Instead, they are merely estimates. Can you imagine competing in the "Phantom" registry sets and spending all of that money to get a coin that is merely an estimate? I suppose it is fine for people who have money to spend and think all of that money they are forking over for estimated coins merely for a good standing.

How do the rest of you feel about the "Phantom" registry sets? Do you feel that it puts a damper on the rest of the registry and compromises PCGS's good reputation? For those of you who are competing in the "Phantom" registry, please explain. We scratched the surface on this topic in a previous thread and thought that it deserved its own.

"Phantom" sets, that sounds like something ACG would do! j/k image

i agree,,,the phantom sets are somewhat like a story that cannot be proven and gets bigger and blown out of proportion over the yrs..an alternative might be put under experts comments...i.e it has long been felt that joe blows set built in the 30's and sold in the 70's was among the finest and might well stand up today"...current finest matters most but it is nice to have some history not just a "phantom exaggerated estimate"
