New member saying hi with a question.

Hi all,

This is my first post on here and just wanted get your opinions. My brother-in-law and I do some metal-detecting in Slovakia when I visit there and I collect ZAR coins myself. We have unearthed the coins below and I was hoping someone could confirm my identification of them and also tell me if they are collectable at all as well as how common they are.

Thanks in advance and hopefully I can bring you some new samples soon image

First looks to be an AE3 Constantius II with Fel Temp Reparation rev.(return of the good times!). Others out of my area. The Fel Temp reverse was also used by other 4th C. emperors so just an educated guess on who is shown on the obverse.

The first coin is definitely a Constantius II the best identifying factor for me is the 2 tassels behind his head which seem to be common on his designs(especially the way they stand in that one). One thing I haven't seen on any other of the horseman spearing barbarian coins is that "skirt" design of the horseman so I don't know which mint it is from yet.

Anyone else have any knowledge of the other coins?
  • IDs are correct on the other 3.
Krause now lists the last one under German States - Silesia, Brieg mint KM#594(was Austria KM#1365/#170).

Eben, the "tassles" are the tie to the pearl diadem which was worn by nearly all the mid-fourth century emperors (eg Constans, Julian, etc.) and the warrior is in typical garb for the time and common to many mints.

  • Thanks Jim,

I was looking at THIS page to try and identify the exact type but I cannot match the gard exactly with any of those designs.

DCH, I'm as much of a novice as you will get image so I don't exactly know what you mean. Is Krause a catalogue?

    Hi Eben,
Try this page since you have the coin in hand it may be easier for you to attribute.
    Hope this helps,
    Jim
  • hmmm The diadem tie and the gard still doesn't match any of those but thank you for the link.
