South Florida has confirmed firing football coach Jim Leavitt after an investigation concluded he grabbed one of his players by the throat and slapped him in the face during halftime of a game.
A letter hand delivered to the coach and released along with a report on the three-week probe said Leavitt’s dismissal Friday was based in part on “independently corroborated statements of persons found to be in the best position to observe your conduct.”
what happened???

As for what happened, nobody REALLY knows even after the investigation was done. Some players said he hit the kid, others say he grabbed the kids shoulder pad... even the player in question, Joel Miller, a walk on, has backed away from his comments since the first reports were announced. I live down the hall from some guys on the team, but none of them would really say much about it and I kind of let it be.
I'm not all that sad to see him go. I feel terrible for the guy since he is a St. Pete native and built the program from the ground up. However, the team has been stuck in a rut of 8-9 win seasons for the past 5 years, when year after year people predict us to contend for the Big East, so maybe some new blood will be good for the program as a whole, and help us get over the "hump".
Possible candidates that have been listed are Tommy Tuberville (Auburn's ex-coach), Dan Mccarney (Gators D-Line Coach), and Michigans offensive coordinator. That's all just speculation for now though.
My buddy just texted me saying...."greatness or disaster awaits USF..." haha. I kind of agree with him though, things will be very interesting the next couple of years!
In the end, go Bulls!

I don't think you quite get what a rut is.
Tell him to send his resume to J. Maturi @ the University of Minnesota. We have a shiny new stadium and need someone to come up here and kick #$!#$@!.

Haha sorry, I'm just saying it's a bit of a groundhogs day in Tampa every year.
2006: 9-4
2007: 9-4
2008: 8-5
2009: 8-5
All of this basically after starting each season 5-0, with big non conference wins each year (@Auburn, Kansas, @ Florida St.). We go M.I.A. in conference play every year.
BTW, GREAT new stadium! Many Bulls fans hope to use a similar design when we move on-campus someday...

Yeah, not much of a rut, just a let down after starting each season strong.
<< <i>Some of us have been here since the beginning. 13 seasons. We have donated. We have sat in the rain, in the cold, in games when only 10k or less attended. At times when we could not find people to take our extra tickets. When our program consisted of guys who NO ONE in the football world would have offered a scholly to. When we could not hit .500 for the season.
From that, we watched the remarkable happen. We watched Leavitt see not the monumental task in front of him, but instead see what it could become. He started with a salary of $75k. Very paltry in the head coaching world. He was a leader, and had been there and done that having played, been an all american in football and baseball, and a top Defensive coach at KS.
We watched him in the trailer. We read stories about his 17 hour days 7 days a week to build this program. We saw him at events and heard his passion. And we bought into it. We donated. We volunteered. We attended. We supported, without hesitation, this blossoming program he was building.
In 13 years, we went from that to a BCS program, with a top ranked athletic facility, and a team who was ranked and has 5 consecutive bowl games and getting 6 - 8 nationally televised games a year. A huge feat.
So many of us on this board, especially those in their 30's and up, realize what a huge loss this is to USF. What huge contribution and sacrifice Leavitt put into the program. And the fact that whoever takes it over is getting an easy job because the rough part has already been done for them, by Leavitt. No one wins in this. Coaches, players, assistants, families, USF, etc.
