1955 Topps AA Cello pack crackout results are in

Cracked out another graded '55 All American cello pack B4 Xmas and the results are back. This was a very good pack. Of the 19 cards (bummer only 19, as many packs contain 20 cards) only six were not worth grading, so the thirteen came back as follows:

Grange 7, Nomellini 8, Dodd 8, Schulz 8, Hollenback 8, Rosenberg 8, Four Horseman 8, Whitmire 9, Hanson 9, Edwards 9, Cagle 9, Rockne 9, and Kaw 10!

The Kaw is awesome and 1/1. Another huge addition to our No. 1 set.

I was surprised by the five 9's as I predicted only three would be 9's - so that is good. Disheartening that the Horseman was not an 8.5 or 9, it is a superlative 8 and should get bumped. The Grange 7 is mystifying as it has the centering of at least an 8. Possible microscopic corner pull from pack's tightness.

What an awesome submission. Are you the guy that was in the latest SMR that has all the unopened 1955AA? I enjoyed reading that article on you and your family (if it is you) and how you saved the boxes of cards for so long.

    Congrats!

Hey Mike. Sorry no Hutson's in that one. I am still thinking the 7.5 is going to be a 9 and the 7 is going to be an 8 when we get around to it. Keep the faith.

You can tell us. Those cards are so sharp--Did you get any EOT from PSA. They've been known to do this quite often even right out of the pack. It sounds like you sent in 100's.

No this is not the first pack, and no have not sent in "100's" either. The PSA turn arounds have been pretty darn fast on my AA's, except the reviews take longer.

    Macdoube,
I did not mean you sent in 100's of packs. I meant cards. From the article it sounds like you've sent in quite a few cards. Did they grade any trimmed right out of the pack?

Congrats on those amazing results! Have you estimated the market value of each card(VCP) versus the market value of the pack?

I would like to know if it can realistically be worth ripping an old pack like that or if you had to have this type of luck overall to even be close.

I'd love to know too. I've done some quick analysis of packs around 68-71, and it seems like it only makes financial sense if you pop at least 10% low pop in high grades or pop a key card. For example, I've priced 1970 wax packs (anywhere from $150-250), and you need to pop 2 9's of low pop (worth around $65-70 each, for example) for it to pay.

Yes - we have sent in a lot for grading over the last year. we have the better part of 8 sets completed. only a few cards got kicked back for size or trim, but we just alert them that is not poss. with these and they properly grade them.
there can be a slight size variance right out of the packs

with these cellos, like all vintage packs, centering is the issue 99.8% of the time. I can only tell you we have pulled 31 gem mt 10's (of a total pop of 38 - so only 7 are not ours) and have hundrerds of 9's (we own appx. 40% of the total 9 pop). There have been about 23,000 AA's graded.

Have you ever sold any cards that you graded straight from packs? I ask this because you might want to have PSA petigree your cards so others down the road when you sell them that it came from your collection. Your story is a really cool one.

    Shane:

Good point. PSA did discuss that with us already, and at some point in the future we may opt to do that. I know that is generally reserved for the upper tier collectors who have a plethera of different high grade sets. I have seen the "Ireland" flips, but not any others that I can recall.

    Shane,

To answer your question, yes we have sold many of our right out of the pack-graded cards. We have sold lots of 7's and 8's, but nothing really higher. Steve Hart sold about 300 of our graded cards at the Natl and Philly show.
