First off, congratulations to HOF-Elect (why don't more people use that term?) Andre Dawson. But what is most shocking is that we had not one, but two players just BARELY miss election. Now that is very unusual. Bert Blyleven came up FIVE votes short (he must be pulling his hair out now, if he has hair), and Roberto Alomar came up eight votes short. I do think Barry Larkin and especially Edgar Martinez should've gotten more support than they did but I wasn't exactly expecting any first ballot elections this year anyway.
Okay, everyone here knows that I think Mr. Blyleven and Mr. Kaat are first and second in most deserving to go into the HOF. I think I've now found a third place candidate. I am absolutely shocked that Harold Baines this year got a mere 6.1% of the vote. What's so special about Mr. Baines you might ask? Well geez, he only got 2866 hits (134 short of 3000, which has always been an automatic first ballot bid), 1299 runs scored and 1628 RBI. And on top of THAT, he even has shirt hung up by the White Sox (though IMO that honor came far too early). Surely he deserves more R-E-S-P-E-C-T than that.
Remember, whenever I personally size up potential HOF candidates, the first thing I ALWAYS look for is overall career numbers, seeing as how the reason they must wait five years is so that they're whole career can be assessed. Things like championships, awards, leading the league in a key stat in so many seasons and so on I count as plusses, but I don't think anything like how long they played (if anything a workhorse player should be a plus, not a minus) or not winning any championships should ever count against them because championships are a TEAM accomplishment.
