2009 Lincoln Penny - special wrappers

I've been a "lurker" on this forum for quiet some time now, but have a question regarding the 2009 Lincoln Penny. I'm interested in purchasing some rolls (both P &D) of the pennies and would like input on whether or not you think that the extra cost of buying the pennies in the "special" wrappers (i.e. obtained at the site of the various ceremonies, where the pennies where introduced) would be worth the extra cost in the long run. I have rolls from the mint (which I have kept in their sealed boxes), however am trying to decide if any extras I buy should be in the special wrappers, or to just buy those in the "String" wrappers.

Input greatly appreciated.

My opinion is the special wrapper will probably not add much value in the future. A small premium at best, In my opinion.

  • Not only do I think that the "special" wrappers deserve no premium, I also feel like these would not have much future potential, for a few reasons. Millions upon millions have been minted, and millions have been saved and hoarded already.

Three of my grandkids hit the Denver Mint back in Feb. '09 on the day the first of the four Lincoln Cents were released.
They were making a return visit from a few days prior (they live in Denver) when they had been promised a 'special collectible.'
What they were given was a mint cello pack containing a blank.

I picked up 3 LP1 D rolls to give them to complete their collection.
Not a valuable trove but fun for all.

  • IMO the only one that may carry a premium in the future (if any) are the mint issued LP1 Birth Place P&D roll set. I believe there was only 96,000 sets that were sold while the next 3 sets (LP2, LP3, LP4) will sell at least 200,000 (LP2 & LP3 are well beyond that but the LP4 is creeping up. Here is the current US Mint sales as of 12/10 courtesy of Goldbully) I also believe that there had to be at least some people who opened the LP1 sets up - making the population smaller. As for buying them in String & Sons rolls or any kind of bank rolls I see them having no potential value because they are being hoarded - but if you can get them at face value then why the heck not, right? Welcome here to the forum. I am glad you decided to come on board.
  • Definitely spend the extra money and get yourself First Day Issue rolls from the Mint ceremonies. Just look at what bank boxes are selling for right now and as supply really dries up next year and in the coming years as the FED distributes the 2010, 2011, etc.. penny these one year hit wonder 4 pennies in the series will really take off. TO have a ceremonial FIrst Day Roll will really be big as few are sold on ebay and I expect years down the road fewer and fewer rolls will be sold. I tried getting First Day ceremony rolls from Hodgenville and it took me 2 months to just get 5 rolls because sellers were so sparce and it only has been less than a year since the hodgenville ceremony. Now if supply is so low now what will it be like a few years from now? These 2009 pennies are going to be so hot down the road it won't even be funny. 50 years of wheats, 50 years of the monticello penny, and here in 2009 we had this one year hit wonder with low supplies and unbelievable reverse designs. I expect for the next 25 or 50 years we will see a generic reverse and once again back in 2009 we had this one year hit wonder of 4 designs. These pennies will be so hot for years to come and to have a FIrst Day roll will be ossum because not only do about 1000 or 2000 First Day cancelled rolls exist from each ceremony, but they also look ossum. Trust me these First Day rolls are extremely extremely rare. IMagine having a First Day roll that was cancelled on the first day release of the wheat or monticello penny? YEs, there are an abundance of wheat and monticello penny rolls out there, but when was the last time you saw a roll stamped and cancelled on the first day of release of the wheat penny back in 1909 or the monticello back in 1959? WHen or if you go to resell rolls of these 2009 pennies down the road you will see many rolls of just regular nfs string rolls, but I bet you will hardly see any of the First Day cancelled rolls. Little or no supply will mean high prices. You can get a DC ceremonial roll for under $15 on ebay and for a regular generic nfs string roll you would spend $7 or $8, so why not spend the extra money to get something much rarer and nicer? For the most part you can get first day ceremonial rolls for under $20 for any of the 4 ceremonies and I expect these low prices won't last for long.
