Coins and Medallions are ART , they are a picture of s specific period in time, we had no internet, TV, newspapers we had engravers who created coins and Medallions for the people to see the deeds of the King, Tyrant or Emperor to last for eternity.

Post here your dream coins that have a meaning to you, explain why they give you that specific feeling whatever it may be.

Not sure what to write other than when I saw the portrait in the picture I needed to see the coin itself and bid at auction that I do seldom these days. I do not remember many portraits of the King showing the profile details in so beautiful way, his moustache and aristocracy of the King and what he considered his ultimate supremacy below God.

There are several designs that I really admire, but this particular medal makes me just want to look at it for ever.

Mine's not so much artistic as historical, here's one that always gets me;

Louis XVI here in 1788, the French revolution hadn't happened, centuries of tradition (for better or worse) was engrained within the Ancien Regime and the symbol of that ancient kingship here exemplified by the descendent of the Roi Soleil. The funny thing is that whilst in 1788 Louis' head was to be found on coins throughout the French realm by 1793 Louis wouldn't even have a head on his body let alone anywhere else. An institution as 'safe' and 'solid' as the French monarchy was swept away within five years. How many other things do we take for granted as absolutes that in actual fact, aren't?

I really like my Droz pattern 6d, even though they aren't rare I think they are lovely.



And even though it isn't a very high grade this 1825 1/4d is one of the prettiest coins I have, in hand it looks like toned silver.



I also like other historical world coins such as this 1708 Brunswick 4 Mariengroschen, and a lot of the commemorative Ducats from the German States.

I've got a few coins that I love to look at but the one that really made sure I caught the gold bug and got me hooked on collecting gold coins was:

1380-1422 Charles VI French ecu'or


Its wasn't my very first gold coin, (although it was one of my first) but holding it in hand looking at
its lovely design, imagining what it would of been like to live back in that era,
what you could have purchased with it, etc...

I collect mainly Germany and Austria as this is where my family came from, here are a few pieces I intend to purchase this coming year.
In Germany I have all the Wilhelm II Prussian with this exception.

I also have some Bavaria and Hamburg but I think Frankfurt will be my next stop, this is one of the pieces I'd like to acquire.

1750 is as struck with hints of original lustre betwen the letters with the 1816 with superb toning. this string is bringing choice coins for all to see and enjoy

correct always dreamed on a piece, there was one in auction recently but outbid - it is horroble, to get something these days you nearly have to give a "buy" order then what happens if two people give a "buy" order -----

I'm going to say, This one. It has launched me in a new collecting direction. Rolled Old Gold or Hammered Gold.
Since these are not within my buying power, It will be necessary for me to sell off other coins in my collections to buy these, Just what collecting is all about.

The double strike is probably why the obverse was struck up so perfectly, as the flan remained in the obverse die for two strikes. Distinguishable from the cheaper Jean & Wenceslaus Brabant issue by the use of 'REX' instead of 'DVX' on obverse.
