A question for you 2 or 3 modern Basketball collectors.

Why do you guys think people are still paying semi-high prices for Ricky Rubio rookies? Are these European collectors or people just speculating that he'll put up big NBA numbers in 3-4 yrs?

  • Well.....

I think it is all speculation at this point. Since he has not played in the NBA there is still an unknown and people are hoping they can scoop up a few auto rookies which will get an instant bump in value if he comes to the NBA nad plays decently from the get go.

Personally I stay away from all of the hype and prospecting. If Lebron does not win a championship or two in the next few years his cards will start to bottom out as well.

The strangest thing about all the NBA speculation is that generally speaking if a player is going to be a star, they exhibit the qualities almost from day one. Rarely does a young guy develop into a star in the NBA after starting out slow. If Rubio is not ready to play that tells me he may not have what it takes to be an all time great, and that means his cards will not retain long term value.
  • Rubio is about as close to a sure thing as you can get with a point guard (the NBA's version of the wide receiver in terms of predicting success). Add to that his International appeal and his cards are going to garner a lot of buzz, even before he ever hits the NBA.

The fact that he turned pro at like 15 and was dominating international play at 17-18, you can understand why there is such hoopla around him.
