Mechanical error or a fake?

Hey gents,

This card clearly doesn't belong to the 1915 CJ set (note that the reverse is NOT inverted), but do you guys think it's just a mechanical error (wouldn't be the first I've seen), or a Craigslist fakaroo?

Note: The cert# DOES match up, although that's no guarantee of anything.

  • I'm am by no means a 1915 CJ expert, but why would someone fake a PSA 3 Gene Packard?

    I vote fake.

  • I hear ya, Bill, but most PSA 3 commons will fetch $80+, which is far less conspicuos than those cherry '52 Mantles that seem to keep popping up.

    Exactly!

    It's reverse psychology...

The scammers figure people are looking more closely at the higher value/demand cards, so they start faking the lower value, but still in-demand cards in higher quantity, figuring people won't suspect them to be fakes.

  • Its a mechanical error . Packard is number 142 in the 1914 and 1915 set . The cards have normal backs in 1914 and in 1915 they were upside down

Another words . PSA made a boo boo . Its from 1914

I'm not familiar with CJs, but would like to be. Can you explain what that means?

Edited to add: I think bigwilli just did.
  • I'm certainly hopeful of that, bigwilly. I'll be piggybacking it with another submission next week, and I'll soon have the verdict.

  • Nam...........All the cards from 1915 have backs which are upside down from the front . The 1914 set look identical to the 1915 set
but have backs which are not upside down from the front

NAM - The 1915 Cracker Jacks's have the backs upside down if you will when you
flip the card over. The 1914's are rightside up if you flip them over.
The Packard as stated by BIGWILLI appears to be a 1914 version

It's a mechanical error. I've had a bunch like that. They have a hard time telling the difference between '14's and '15's at times.

    The differences-
    '14's are on thinner paper
'14's have the back printed the right way, '15's are printed upside down
'14's say 144 subjects on the back, '15's say 176 and contain an offer to send away for the set or for an album.

And a nice looking '14 CJ at that!

Nick, wanna learn more about these? The '14 CJ's were only available in packages of Cracker Jacks, so they almost always have caramel staining on them, as does this one. The '15s were available via a mail-in offer, so they often can be found w/o staining on them. And as Anthony alluded to, the '14s were much thinner and more brittle, so they're tougher to find in nice shape...

Thanks for all the info everyone. I appreciate it.
  • Hey Griffins,

Well, it's nice to know that I'll get a little monetary bump with an actual '14 CJ, but I'm more bummed than anything. This was going to be my 67th '15 CJ in a PSA 3.

FYI, when I get this back in it's proper slab, I'll trade it straight-up to any one of you guys who can offer up a '15 CJ PSA 3 common that I don't already have.

It sold for $92 mislabled as a 1915, so how much more should the same grade of the same card in 1914 bring?
  • For somebody who wanted it, my guess would be another $20 or $25 or so.

This happens to be fairly clean and well-centered, too.

Very old label (hologram back). Agree with all above that it is a '14 CJ

For what it is worth PSA 3's generally sell in the $80-110 range from 1914
  • The 1915 set came also with an album so if the cards where taped in on top top, you could flip them and still read the backs
  • Last PSA 4 for the 1914 sold for $218.50. No PSA 3's on VCP.
  • Just had to make an appearance in any thread that talks about the Cracker Jacks cards image

Lots of newbies who are cluless on CJ cards answering ..... image

That card is ONLY a common 1914 E145-1 card, mislabeled.

1914s (E145-1) have 144 pictures on back and are NOT upside down, 1915 (E145-2) have 176 pictures on back and are ALWAYS upside down

Someone at PSA hire a person who knows (can ID) vintage please..... this is getting old..... PSA with their heads Up their ... again

I may be wrong, but I believe these were sold inside boxes of Cracker Jack, which is a popcorn confection, during the years 1914 and 1915.
