Jaime, What do you do if you need to dial 911? >>
Cell phones are perfectly capable of dialing 911.
BTW folks, there are two versions of the DNC list - commercial and non-profit. You have to sign up for both. Also, there are loop holes a plenty in the DNC laws, so just because you're on the lists don't expect to never receive sales/solicitation calls.
As to the "tell them to get a real job" and "play around with them" comments, many people that work in phone rooms in the US do so because there are really no viable alternatives for them. Often times these operations pay a bit more than minimum wage (usually 10 - 20%) and offer a very modest bonus structure. The people that work there do so because it's slightly better than flipping burgers and offers them substantially more hours than a McJob. The "get a better job" comments are just plain insensitive - especially in this economy. As far as "playing with them" goes, you're only wasting your own time. I assure you that these people have heard it all. It isn't personal to them. They aren't trying to irritate you or make your life harder. They're trying to sell a product or solicit money in the manner their employer directs them to using the resources they are provided with. If you have a problem with telemarketing, take it up with the businesses that do it. Attempting to retaliate against the workers is just petty and will serve absolutely no function other than possibly making a hard job even harder for somebody.

I dont have a home phone anymore, just the cell. And I shut that off once too many people had the number that I no longer cared to talk with... About anything.
Personally, I think it was rude, but remember, they are just doing a job, and while its no excuse for that type of treatment, Im sure they get their balls busted on a hourly cycle with what their job description is. Id just chalk it up to some young rude person with lots of piercings and lots of rage...
No one loves charitable organizations more than Longacre, but do the callers really think that I am going to give a donation to an organization that I never even heard of? They seem surprised when I say that although I am sure their organization is worthy and does good works, there are certain organizations that I support and I cannot donate to everyone who calls the estate. I try to be nice with these calls, but it's sort of silly. And the worst are the police action leagues (?) whose first words are a veiled thread that "we're on a recorded line for my protection".

I'm sure it isn't this way in all of America, but here in Southern California (at least) 911 calls from a cell phone are routed to the CHP. Sometimes there can be a twenty minute delay as that same agency handles "911" freeway call boxes too. Even when answered in a timely fashion the CHP then needs to forward your emergency call to your local 911. That takes time. Precious time in a true, dire emergency.
Cell phones 911 calls do not go directly to the emergency operator. That reason alone is worth having a landline within a residence.

Also, during earthquakes, multi-state power blackouts, or terrorist attacks, we found the landlines worked when cell phones did not.

<< <i>I am never nasty or mean to the telemarketer folks that call me. Yet I am never receptive either.
I have a quick little saying "I'm sorry but I am not interested, thank you anyway" followed by a hangup.
This gets them onto their next call as soon as possible. It's the best possible outcome for both parties. >>
A quick "I am sorry I accept no phone solicitations of any kind" and then hang up always works.
Problem solved, but now I have many new problems....
