I purchased one about 6 months ago. But I could only get it to scan NGC slabs. I could not get it to work on PCGS slabs. So my advice is to try before you buy

Do a Google search for "USB Bar Code Scanner".

Lots of stuff comes up and it appears many of them are 'plug and play'.

    I haven't tried it, so I can't recommend any.

  • I've used mainly Symbol handheld scanners at work but most barcode scanners will let you change the scanner's configuration if there's a problem reading a particular barcode. That being said, PCGS barcodes can be somewhat challenging to read because they're not very tall and the bottom part of the barcode is often covered by the edge of the holder's label window. That edge can disrupt the scanner beam sufficiently to prevent a clear read of the barcode.

I just downloaded an iPhone app that is a bar scanner. So far, I've scanned a bunch of bar codes on things around my house, and danged if the thing doesn't work great. Identifies the item, then tells you all the places you can buy that item, prices in descending order. It's flat amazing. I tried it on one PCGS coin, didn't read it.

  • I don't know much about the iPhone barcode scanner, whether it's a general-purpose scanner or if it specializes in reading UPC barcodes, which is what we typically see on household products. PCGS' barcode looks like it could be using Code 39 symbology, which is another common encoding scheme. Again, the PCGS barcode isn't very tall so whatever scanner is used needs to have a tight beam focus (which the iPhone scanner might not have).

I just use copy and paste. Serves me fine.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • PCGS bar-code quality must be bad as I haven't found a Barcode scanner that works on PCGS barcodes.
I can ready just about everything else. Also it is not the plastic causing problem as I cracked open one PCGS coin I was getting regraded and scanner still could not read barcode.
Obviously this is something PCGS never tested.
I have software that comes with my Dino Capture camera that can read about 10% of PCGS barcodes.
When I asked PCGS about a scanner they referred me to this forum.
For barcode readability PCGS is not #1 even 2nd and 3rd tier graders have readable barcodes.

Have you checked the PCGS Bar Code info page? Your scanner has to be able to read "Interleave 2 of 5" format. Selectable in your scanner app settings usually.

I just tried Google Goggles, free, on my Nexus 7 and it read the code on a HOF coin. You might buy the Motorola hand scanner if you do a lot of scanning but the free apps for smart phones and tablets work just fine for general use. I also tried the app "Scan". It didn't recognize the PCGS code and did not return a result.

  • I have the SYMBOL LS2208-SR20007 SCANNER HAND HELD BLACK and yes it scans NGC but not PCGS
It scans USPS barcodes, Microsoft tiny bar codes.
I am happy someone at least can read bar codes and gave a model.
So maybe I should return mine and get a replacement.
Yes I found a phone app to read the bar codes but I want to put them in my computer not my phone.

Chuckno8, are there settings for your scanner? You set it to read Interleave 2 of 5 format? Iconbuster and Photoguy use theirs. Check your configuration.

Quickbooks "Point of Sale" system has hardware and software for generating merchandise bar codes. Comes with a laser scanner, label printer and the program software can store a database of manually generated bar codes for inventory.

I bought a hand held bar code scanner from a board member several years ago and it works fine on most PCGS slabs. If the insert is too far down, you have to tilt the slab to get the scanner to read it. But...I think it is better than the manual entry.

AMRC, MS Word true type font 3 of 9 I believe.
  • Yeah! Found out how to program barcode reader correctly, fyi there are 2 steps. 1 Enable I25 second is set length to any length.
As warning states occasionally will mis-scan
Now it scans. The LS2208 model.

I use my scanner to just get the NGC number to bulk into their database. Is there a scanner out there that will read the entire data set and move it into Excel? Will the $69 one on Amazon do this?

Most scanners simulate being a keyboard, so whatever could be typed can be scanned.
