Recent Rips - Thinking of grading... mostly modern

So I've done a number of recent rips through CU group rips as well as taking advantage of some of those Topps Corporate discounts. The following cards for the most part I'm thinking of submitting under the $5 special. My question is am I better off trying to sell these raw or graded? A couple like the Flacco Rookie Autograph I am keeping for my collection. Alot of these are relics or jersey cards and I'm not sure of the benefit... I haven't seen many of these graded....

here's the first group:

here's the next group- Note the Sandberg error cards I already had.. the recent error of the week had me thinking it might be worth grading some of these:

and the last group:

Thanks for any help.

Maybe you shouldnt grade the Mantle seat relic since the 9 is broken, and I dont know how that will affect the grade. It should look like this:

WOW... didn't know that was supposed to be a 9... I can now see where it was torn upon closer inspection and knowing it should be a 9 not a zero... thanks for pointing that out and nice specimen you have there...

  • I also would not grade the 1993 Bowman Aikman, three bad corners and edges. Most of the others it is pretty hard to tell the corners from your scans. Even if perfect I would never grade a Hasselbeck card, especially any GU card, since they tend to come out of packs as 8s and 9s.

However, mostly it depends on your purpose of grading. If you really like the cards and you would prefer them graded, get them graded.

If doing for resale, I would consider the two Sandberg's on the ends, the Winslow RC and the Flacco. Maybe the Cris Carter if I could look at it closer. Flacco is likely an 8 or 9 and if he came back under a 9, I would crack and sell raw on eBay.

    Clear Skies,

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

None of the first group are likely to be worth the cost to grade even if they get 10s.

Of the second group, if that is a true Brees rookie (numbered as part of the base set), a 9 or 10 grade would add value. If it's an insert card, don't bother grading it.
Unless one of the Sandbergs could get a PSA 10, it's not worth it. The left one I can't tell; the other two are not going to get PSA 10s.
Nothing else in the second group is likely to be worth the cost to grade even if they get 10s.

Of the third group, the Carter and Sanders rookies are profitable to grade if you get a 10, and you can get your money back on a 9.
If you're keeping the Flacco, decide whether you want it raw or graded. Don't worry about the money in that case.
If the Kellen Winslow rookie looks to you like a 9 or 10, grade it.
The Manning and Dierdorf are very nice, but unless they're low pop, grading 9s on them won't be profitable.
Nothing else in that group is in gradeworthy condition.

Don't bother with the fourth group. Nothing there is likely to be worth the cost to grade even if they get 10s.

  • With the exception of the 1981 Topps football, nothing you posted is worth grading. The stupid prices you see on eBay for PSA 10 non rookie cards of HOF'ers are for low pop cards with a lot of registry competition. None of the players you showed have that type of registry competition yet. The HOF'er GU'd cards you have do not count in the registry master sets so they are worth about the same in PSA 10 holders as they are raw.
  • Guys:

Thanks for the insights, it is appreciated. A couple of these are for my son (15 year old getting into collecting). Those cards for $5 I'd probably grade for the protection purpose so they still be nice cards 10 years from now.

<<The stupid prices you see on eBay for PSA 10 non rookie cards of HOF'ers are for low pop cards with a lot of registry competition. None of the players you showed have that type of registry competition yet>> Bill- I can only hope that one day they'll get to that crazy competition phase, in the meantime I'll set those aside

    NicK:
The Brees is a SP Authentic rookie jersey card. I see a couple that sold raw on eBay around $200, one listed raw for $700 and another listed as BIN for $300. All the ones sold and currently on sale are raw cards and that's why I was wondering if it's worth the grading...

<<Don't bother with the fourth group. Nothing there is likely to be worth the cost to grade even if they get 10s>>

Agreed, it wasn't the picture I thought I posted... haste makes waste... will post the actual cards later tonight when I get home.image

Mark- yes the scan shows what the eye sometimes misses...

Thanks again for the help... sorry for the delay in answering, but had to watch the Giants game with my boy last night and actually had to work today at the office...
