Crossovers

I would welcome any advise anyone has on this topic. I have a number of GAI graded Topps cards of the 50's which I just sent into PSA to have graded. Should I expect the grades to be the same? I did include a minimum grade so I know that they will not be graded lower. Do they ever grade them higher than the grade given by GAI?

It's impossible to say without looking at the cards. I've seen GAI cards that would cross to PSA without any problem, GAI cards that would probably cross a half grade lower (especially GAI half grades - they were a lot looser on half grades than PSA), GAI cards that were definitely overgraded, and GAI cards I suspected were trimmed or altered and would be rejected by PSA. Because most GAI cards were selling for less than PSA cards in equivalent grades, people would have already resubmitted it to PSA if it were worthwhile financially (i.e., any undergraded card in a GAI holder is probably not worth the cost to resubmit to PSA).

I think Nick covered all the bases. I agree with him and think it will be a crap shoot. You'll win on some, you'll lose on some and some may not grade at all.

    Blackberryhill,
Since you put a minimum grade I would not expect more than half to crossover. This is assuming that you put the minimum grade equal to the already assigned grade. Also, the cheaper the cards the better chance you have in them crossing. I have never had a card bump higher in a crossover in about 35 attempts. These were high dollar cards. Good luck with your sub.

unless they are super high grade, your best bet is to crack and sub what doesn't cross...
  • Thanks to all. I will let you know as soon as I get results. I did submit with a minimum grade that was the same as GAI grade.

Since you are asking PSA to (at the very least) agree to GAI's grade assessment, dont be surprised to get them all back in their original GAI holders.

I submitted 11 BCCG 10s for crossover with an acceptable minimum of grade 9. Four of them PSA crossed over to 9s and the seven of them they returned because they didn't see them as 9s. Three of the grades that they would not grade, I removed from the BCCG case and submitted them. They all came back 9s. The remaining 4 I still have and will probable remove them from their case and submit them with a huge lot of cards that I need graded. Just my experience.

  • So here are the results of round one of items I sent to PSA for crossover wityh minimum grades the same as GAI:

    54 Topps Mays GAI 6 PSA 6
    54 Topps GAI 5 PSA 5
55 Topps Mays GAI 5 No Crossover at minimum of 5
    56 Topps Clemente GAI 5 PSA 5
56 Topps Mays GAI 7.5 No Crossover at minimum 7.5

Actually you did fairly well. Good luck with the others. Your most expensive card did not cross. You might want to accept a 7 on the 56 mays. I think a PSA 7 is worth more than a GAI 7.5 or very close. JMHO. To me crossing over cards is to maximize your potential when it comes time to sell even if you have no desire to sell. Unless a card is seriously overgraded I would get every card that was in a GAI holder crossed over. To me GAI is done and have been a black eye for the industry. To me, GAI made people view cards in all holders as potentially altered.

I would agree with Mickey71 in that you may want to accept a half or full grade less on some of these cards and more would probably cross. I think being in a PSA holder even with a lower grade they would sell for more money than being in a GAI holder with a higher grade.
