Worrying About SCD Weekly

I've subscribed Sports Collectors Digest for 20 years and it seems the weekly publication is constantly close to setting a new record for fewest number of pages. 34-38 total pages is not uncommon. Don't know if I should re-subscribe in case they end up going to online only. It appears certain that advertising is moving more to online and less to print. I still enjoy the articles and hope they can maintain the publication. Any thoughts.

  • They sell SCD in the Barnes & Noble by me, and I almost never buy it since it's so small. They should really switch to a monthly. The days when SCD was 300+ pages are long gone!
  • I used to subscribe. I remember barely making it through one issue before the next one came, that was fun! However, that magazine is in serious decline. I soured on them when they didn't even bother to send me the free bobblehead with my subscription (didn't feel like even putting in the effort to contact them) and then the magazine declined severely and it just wasn't worth it. I found that I got better deals from them if I let it expire. I think that even the "new subscriber" offer they have online all the time may end up being a better deal than resubscribing.
  • IMO they have long since lost their relevance and their long association with Coaches Corner auctions didn't help either. I subscribed for nearly twenty years and today probably wouldn't accept a free subscription.

I have had SCD for 15 years or so. I would miss it but it is a sad looking thing now.
  • Sadly; what is occuring with SCD is typical of print. Look; there is no real reason to advertise with SCD and run the old school traditional auctions they used to have in the 70's-90's. Why spend money to sell material that you can either 1) Sell on EBay or other web sites (including your own) or 2) if the item is really good through one of the major auction houses.

So, many advertisers either have switched venues or have dropped out of the business. And the people who would replace them are not attached to print in any way. So, you have a diminishing group of people to advertise with you. Even Al Rosen has annouced his "retirement" in the near future.

The real shame is the editorial package in SCD is as good, if not better, than it was during the glory days of the publication. TS and the people at Krause do a real good job keeping the editorial pipeline going.

I agree with the last poster. The article content has definitely improved over the last few years. I've subcribed since the early/mid-80's and the written content was lacking. I would hope that the subscription base along with the remaining advertising base would support bi-weekly or monthly publication.
  • I let my subscription expire about 6 months ago. I agree that it should go to a bi-weekly format. I can remember how much I would look forward to getting SCD back in the 1980s and reading it cover to cover each week. Now you can read it in 10 minutes.
