Did you accomplish your numismatic goals in 2009?

Well, we're almost at the end of another year. Time flies.
So, assuming most of us have finished making any big purchases for the year,
what did you accomplish in your numismatic goals in 2009?

If you didn't set any goals, that's OK too, I'm sure you had to make some decisions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I decided on the "look" for the silver coins in my 1854 Mint Set.
I also added two new coins to bring me up to four in the set now. I decided
I want very PQ coins, so I don't mind if I move slowly on this set to wait for the
right coins.

One coin did come along just this past month in the Heritage Houston auction
that I was able to acquire. I just received it and it's now my favorite purchase
of the year....an 1854 3CS NGC MS67*...here's the Heritage photos that I cleaned up:

image

Most important to me though, I developed my eye towards what I like and what I don't like
by looking at hundreds, if not thousands of coins during the course of the year.
I've discovered that goes a long way in the focus of a collection! image

I am also trying to make my collection smaller...I don't stockpile as much crap anymore image

My main goal was to downsize the value of my collection, and I succeeded in doing so.

Did you accomplish your numismatic goals in 2009?

Not really, I meant to acquire some Plats in grade 69 to fill some holes in my collection, but I kept plunking money into gold bullion instead.

    Yes!

I'm a few steps closer to the Morgan collection I desire.

    On to 2010!

No, one of the simplest goals is to get the current issue Jefferson's for my registry set, and a 2009-D is no where to be found. Other than that, it was a fantastic year.

    Yes.

I decided to put a set of Barber Halves together, primarially in VF (I do have the odd XF40 or F15 in there) and I managed to do so, I have well over 80% of the set complete since I started in June.

I also started on the Dimes in VF as well and I have made some really strong progress there as well, I've managed to get a lot of the better dates, largely due to luck.

So yes, '09 has been a GREAT year.

Yes. I reached my goal of having a Number One Mercury Dime set which is the Mercury Dimes Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1945). I realize the set is not complete, but it is above the target necessary for the PCGS recognition (there are still some coins which have not been graded by PCGS or any service, so the completion is just not possible--a complete set at this time would only be 98.08 %--my set is 93.27% complete). Many of the coins in my set were the first varieties graded by PCGS and a couple are still the only ones graded by PCGS (1936 DDO for example).

This could have been the only opportunity for me to reach this challenge, but it happened and the set still sits at number 1 today (about 6 months after the awards).

Yes. I kept spending tightly under control while continuing to work on my formerly secret collection of Irish 1 Pound notes of 1977-89. During the year the collection grew to include 65 of the 67 dates in the series, quite an accomplishment as many of the dates are scarce, especially in high grade. I also managed to upgrade quite a few of the dates, two just in the past week.

I'm still looking actively for the two dates I don't have and want to upgrade a few more.

My medal collection grew by just a few pieces.

    All glory is fleeting.

Yes. I kind of-sort of finished my toned Franklin set. My goal has been a minimum grade of MS65 and I have been seriously working on the set for 6 years. The last coin I was looking for was the 1960-D. It is an absolute bear to find with any sort of decent toning... much less nice toning. I finally purchased an NGC MS64 toner with unbelievable toning. The 64 is why I say kind of-sort of finishing the set as it is not a 65. However, it is easily the best NT toned '60-D I've ever seen, so it was worth it to me to call it the final piece of the set. If I can eventually upgrade it I will, but in 6 years of looking for toned Franklins I've never seen ANY '60-D to rival this... much less one in 65.

Some of them yes others are not completed.
Still need four coins for my 1968 to present mint set. Could not find suitable coins to submit or already made for it in the budget range. I guess that I will have to reset the budget for those last few in 2010. But at least I did find the 2009 coins for the new side of it though.
I did get about twenty individual year mint registry sets completed at a high enough grade point to retire them.
Started on the consolidation of my collection by selling some of the extra Mint and Proof sets, and some of the Modern proofs registry sets I had that no longer sparked my interest. Proceeds from then got some nice additions to my half dollar circulated year set and a little gold for the certified stash.

    No, well yes, well...

My goal is just to add the right coins as they come along. I would have loved to finish the seated dollar set but that wasn't possible with the coins that came along in the condition we desired. However we added THE coin and so it's hard to say that our coals weren't met this year...

I can't remember what my goals were image

I know one of them was to get to my first coin show, and that happened. CoinFest in October. Another was to buy 25 pounds of assorted world coins. I bought 0. (I love sorting through them and seeing what I come up with)

    I know there was more...

  • I made some good progress on some sets I've been working on. Spent more than I had planned, because I still strayed from the want list on occasion. I joined a local coin club. Overall, a good year for coins.

  • 2009 for me was my first full year back into coin collecting and a period of change. I made the discovery that I liked toned coins and with that made a lot of changes in my collection, in fact about 95% of what I had last year has been replaced! I also found some direction in my collecting, if you can call what I am acquiring now "direction", but there is at least a little method to my madness. I am setting some goals for the new year, among which are acquiring a couple of colonial coppers I like, a kick butt toned ty1 '17 SLQ, a nice 64 or 65 Hawaiian commem, perhaps a 64 Lafayette commem, and to continue with my toned copper, most of which will be tokens, toned US types, and commem acquisitions.

I did get an error coin website up and running.

I made some awesome contacts from a little episode on this forum image

I bought some really nice errors this year.

I still have a lot more to do that I have NOT finished, not enough hours in the day.

I would say I was extremely successful this year, but I can't recall if those met my goals or not, probably though!
Quality went up and quantity went down, but my collections grew, and one collection was, surprisingly, completed.
I was extremely fortunate to acquire certain coins in certain grades, and will upgrade some of those in years to come.
As of now, I'm only 20 coins away from completing two other sets, and I hope to cut that number in half in 2010, while
    continuing to build other "side-collections".

  • I managed to focus my collection this year, and add two great books to my numismatic library.

    Looking forward to next year!

I only made one numismatic purchase for the entire year. And although it wasn't one of my "target" coins, it was a doozy.

Speety, why haven't you added the 1870s to your reg set yet?
