buffalo problems and BIN price

I was looking at this coin on eBay

and noticed some problems (well actually quite a few)
but noticed it is a "3-1/2 Legged Buffalo"
that the seller did not mention (nor any of the problems)

this was an auction, but lets assume it had a BIN
would you have any interest in this coin with its problems?

and if so, how high would you go with a BIN
otherwise, just state some of its problems
(would you be interested if a 1916 DDO or a 1918/7-D or 1937-D 3 legged if had same problems?)

...and also state how the stated BIN and the decision to purchase would be influenced by the amount of money spent on coins per year

  • I would have no interest in purchasing this coin for the following reasons:

    - Looks like there is something forming under the long feather on the obverse
    - Looks like a small hole (obviously not all the way through) under the smaller feather on the obverse
    - Unknown black substance running from top of the head to the nose on the obverse
    - I have no idea what is going on with United States on the reverse

Oh yeah, it also looks like it was cleaned with this:

I simply would not want this coin in my collection.
  • I wouldn't touch it for all the problems already mentioned.

Any of the coins you mention would be of interest if the price was right. Concerning the '17-D you mention I wouldn't think it would be worth any more than 15 or 20 bucks with those problems. The '17-D 3 1/2 legged is, by the way, the least scarce of all the 3 1/2 legged varieties-it is fairly easy to locate, at least in the lower grade ranges.
  • That one needs to be carried around in your pocket for a while to give a more "normal" look. But then, it still has the other issues, so .....

    ....No interest in this one.

I agree with the above comment. The 17d 3 and one half legger, while not scarce, is certainly a nice variety worth including in a buffalo nickel collection. There are varying amonts of the leg visible on any specific coin depending upon the die state. I like to call the early die states where there is not enough of the leg missing to call a 3 and one half legger the "pre-legger" or "proto-legger". Anyway it is certainly worth going after if the price is not much above a normal die. buffnixx
