I ret'd this CBH but kept this one. Your opinion?

I didn't like the '37 reverse...weak lettering, probably worn die. So I returned it. I like the '34 very much. Awesome luster and color, nice strike. Better than my lame photos.

Right or wrong move? Only a year or two collecting CBH's so I have a lot more to learn.
Lance.

Edited to say I decided to keep both after all. Thanks for the advice and counsel! image

  • If I had to choose between the two coins, I'd keep the 1834, hands down.

But I don't think the 1837 is a bad coin by any stretch of the imagination. I really like them both.

Thanks for the feedback, Chad. They're both PCGS AU55. And oddly, the '37 has nicer details in the central devices. I guess I got hung up on the edges.

I haven't shipped back the '37. It's ready for tomorrow's mail. I guess I'm having shipper's remorse. Maybe I'll have another single malt and stew it over.

More cleavage on the '34 so it's the keeper. image

I think you did well! That '34 is killer!

The 34 is a killer bustie! I like the 37 too, but in a different way. Tired dies have their own appeal.

While I like the obverse of the 37, the color of the 34 wins hands down. Both are nice, I would keep them both, but if unhappy now, it probably won't improve.
    Good luck.

Both are nice, but I agree that the 1834 is a nicer coin. But comparing them is the proverbial "apples and oranges" as different manufacturing methods were used to create the dies and different coining methods were used to strike the pieces.

Enjoy the single malt (BTW, which one?)... and keep both coins.

My thoughts are that if you didn't like the look of the '37 when you got it, then it would probably keep bugging you.
So, you kept the one you liked, which is always a good move.

    You made the right choice.

If you can only afford one right now, I like the 34 more. If you can afford more and are working on a 55 set, then you shouldn't kick the 37 out just because the 34 is hot. You'll have trouble finding a set to match the 34. --Jerry

Thanks for the feedback. It helps.

As mentioned above, both are graded AU55.

If we were doing "guess the grade" I would have said '34=AU53 and '37=AU58.

Q: Do you figure the '34 was bumped to AU55 because of eye appeal (in hand, has mirrors and looks PL) and the '37 lost ground due to its die state? Is this an example of the difference between technical and market grading?
    Lance.
  • I like both of them, but if I had to choose I would keep the 1837 more detail, the 34 is very nice, as someone else said apples and oranges. 2 different dies and minting methods.

    I would have graded them 34 au55 and the 37 au58/ms62 JMHO

If I was going to buy one coin it would be without question the 1837.

I would have done the opposite of the OP...to where did you return the '37? image

Though many like the color on the 34 enough to still sway their choice away from the stronger struck 37, I am not one of them.

Though I do enjoy the design more of the 37's then that of the 34's.

  • If I were you and could afford to, I'd keep them both.

You could always "upgrade" the '37 if another came along that you liked better. It's obverse is really nice...

I actually find the 1837 more appealing, and would have chosen that over the 1834.

I'm not sure I like either coin. But it's not me making the decision. image

However, I'm left with a question. If you were the seller, how would you feel about this thread?

Look at that luster on the 37.
In fact, I am having a hard time seeing any luster breaks on her.

I've always preferred the design of the 1837 but if I were only going to keep one of those it would have been the 1834. Good choice. image
